PS3 and Surround Sound

Hi all, I'm new to all this, so any help would be greatfully appreciated.

I have a JVC HD TV and a JVC DVD Digital Cinema System

My DVD Cinema System is connected to the TV by Component and to the Sky Box via Scart..All works well, and my sound is obviously out of the Surround Sound for both TV and DVD.

I have recently bought a PS3 and connected that to my TV via HDMI...(great picture)...but obviously this just means sound out of the TV. But i need to turn the sound on the DVD down, as the sound from Sky Box is permanently on, or I could just turn the Sky Box off.

I bought a digital optical cable and have connected my PS3 to the DVD, and this then cuts out the ability to hear sound from the TV when playing games, so i know I have set the Sound to digital optical in the PS3 menu.

But, I therfefore cant get any sound out of the PS3, it's as though I need to change the channel on my DVD, which has L2 (which i normally Use) or L1 but still no joy.
