Default Keep ps3 or buy new blu ray player...

I am thinking about getting a standalone blu ray player. I hate using my Ps3, because it is too loud. I have the original 60gb model. Do you think it would be wise just to keep the Ps3 and deal with the noise, or upgrade to a quieter machine? I find my self constantly turning the volume up and down. Thanks for listening.

I had the same delima as you and waited for the stand alone BD prices to drop to a point that I felt comfy in changing. The PS3 is a good BD player but, like you, the noise and heat really bugged me.

I went with the Panny BD35 and relegated my PS3 to a gaming machine only.

Your PS3 is noisy? I can honestly say my PS3 is whisper quiet when playing discs and the heat is no worse than your average laptop. I don't hear the fans either.

This is a not-quite-year-old 40GB model. I find it strange because I've never heard these complaints about the Xbox 360, but never about PS3.

Interesting. I bought a 40GB this summer (no backwards compatability), and find it's very quiet. Were the older ones louder? That would bug me (I just plugged in my old dreamcast this weekend, and that thing sounds like a jet engine).

The PQ/AQ is great with the BD35! It is as good as the PS3 in both AQ/PQ.

My PS3 is the 60GB model and not whisper quiet at all. It isn't as loud as the 360 but is a lot louder than the BD35.

I have noticed this as well. I bought my 40GB PS3 in June and have not had any heat or fan issues. I have even checked the unit after watching a 2.5 hour BD and it's only slightly warm and the fans that are running are extremely quiet. I think the heat issue seems to be limited to the 60GB from what I keep reading. I just recently bought the Sony remote for the PS3 and absolutely love it because of all the familiar buttons it does indeed power the unit on and off.

Yeah, I also bought the Sony BD remote, and I remember reading that people were complaining that it couldn't power the PS3 on or off. Yet holding the PS button works the same as it does on the controllers, and indeed can turn it on and off.

I have the original 60gb model. They don't make these anymore. It also gets loud when I am playing a game on it.

The 60GB model seems to the most powerful of the bunch in terms of "off the shelf" capabilities. The heat output from this model is very noticeable as well as the fan sound (trying to cool the Cell processor down?).

I bought one of the PS3 remotes too but still ended up buying one of those Nyko USB dongles so I could get IR control.

I like the BD35 for my system. I never used the full media portion of the PS3 such as music storage and such.. only for the occasional game and BD playback.

I've noticed that playing games seems to make the PS3 hotter than watching movies. This is just what I've noticed, so take it for what it's worth. In terms of fan noise (talking about a 80GB w/BC from Jan), games are the loudest, SD movies are second loudest, and BD movies are the quietest.

The new 80GB (noBC from Nov) is dead quite on everything but games. Even then it's not unbearable, but I do notice the fans more often.

Nothing I've seen beats the pure simplicity and functionality of the IR2BT. Unfortunately they got stupid and stopped making the best version and are only making the new version for $150. Idiots.

The original version was $55 and had 100% functionality with my Harmony remote. Logitech even has all the codes pre-programmed. The IR2BT has all the buttons the BD remote has. Even the PS button and can power on and off the PS3. It doesn't even plug into the PS3, so no USB ports are used.

You will have 2 choices for audio. You can use either the red and white analog (stereo) cables or you can use the optical connection. If you are hooking this up to a receiver you can get regular Dolby and DTS 5.1 if you use optical.
