Default PS3 compatible with dolby HD?

Hi,
I have an onkyo amp which is compatbile with dolby HD.
can my PS3 be connected to my amp and allow me to enjoy dolby HD surround sound?
can i connect via HDMI alone or do I need to use an optical cable for the audio?
also, do i need to configure my ps3 settings in any way?
im kind of new to this high def stuff so any advice would be much appreciated.
thank you

Which Onkyo receiver do you have? If the receiver has HDMI repeater you will be good. Optical cannot support Dolby TrueHD or DTS-MA. The PS3 doesn't support bitstream so it decodes the audio and sends it to the receiver via LPCM (somebody correct me when/if I am wrong). That means you will not see Dolby TrueHD light up on your receiver, but as long as you select that audio option you will be getting it (same with DTS-MA).

Im using the Onkyo TX-SR 705
what is a HDMI 'repeater'?
so i should remove the optical, just use the HDMI connection and select LPCM on the receiver?
will try and see how it goes
thanks!

the Ps3 does support bitstream and dolb TrueHD, I have mine set to bitstream, so I can output it though optical fine, Picture thats the picture of the ps3 box, it is supported, says so right on the box, and I do it myself, outputting via optical cable to my logitech 5500, its amazing :P

The PS3 supports bitstream and supports TrueHD. It does not support sending TrueHD over bitsream; it's not possible.

In order to get DTS-HD MA or TrueHD the PS3 must perform the decoding and be setup for Linear PCM and sound output set to HDMI. Shark2k is right.

Just do what I mentioned above. Set sound output to Linear PCM and sound output to HDMI. You need your PS3 connected directly to the receiver with an HDMI cable. Then you'll get TrueHD or DTS-HD MA.

Press Display on the PS3 BD remote (or select it) and view the infobar. It will tell you what it's outputting.

Note: Some media also requires you select TrueHD. For example, The Dark Knight on Blu-Ray will play in Dolby Digital unless you select TrueHD.

You need to set the PS3 HDMI output to PCM and this tells the PS3 to decode all audio out from that connection. You would just select the correct HDMI input that the PS3 is connected to and it will just say "Multi-channel" instead of the HD audio codec used but it WILL be the HD audio.

If you used the optical output of the PS3 you would just get the HD soundtrack down-converted to Standard DD/DTS since that is all the Optical connection can handle. It is best to not even connect it so you KNOW you are always getting the best audio via the HDMI connection.

Everything Shark2k stated was correct.

Yeah, I got a little confused on the bitstream part. I should have remembered it supports bitstream for DD/DTS because that's how I have it setup on my parents receiver (older model before HDMI). I should have clarified that the PS3 can't do Dolby TrueHD/DTS-MA bitstream. But that is why there were others that answered
