Default Help with picture on a Blue ray player

Guys i have a 42" LCD LG 1080p 60 hertz tv and a Samsung BD1500. I watched We Own The Night on it blue ray it was my whole screen no lines or anything great picture great movie. I watched 88minutes blue ray and Kung fu panda blue ray and it has the black lines on top and bottom of my screen. I adjusted my setting and nothing helped. The setting are set on 16:9 wide, 1080p, Move frame 24F on (what is this anyway). I changed the setting to 16:9 normal and with the movie frame off as well and the same thing happened. I did the firm update when i got the player last week. Is there a setting i am missing i do not see anything else i can change. Are the dvd set like this that it is not your full screen or is my tv too small? Any help would be great i really can't stand the lines on top and bottom reason i never bought widescreen movies when i had a regular tv. I noticed on the back of the dvd cases it has numbers which i donot understand like 16:9 1.88.5 stuff like that but We own the night and Kung Fu had the same numbers on the back of the disc and we own the night was full screen and kung fu panda had the lines on top and bottom.

All optical HD (HD DVD/BD) movies, that I know, are presented in their original aspect ratio, also known as OAR. This is the director's intent 99% of the time and it is the way you the viewer are intended to see the movie. Your 16:9 HDTV will have black bars on the top and bottom for the 2:35:1 and 2:40:1 aspect ratios and a couple other odd ratios. If the movie was filmed before 1960 it was probably filmed in 1:33:1 and therefore your screen will have black bars on the sides of your screen. You may want to look at our OAR THREAD HERE for even more information and some screen caps.

No problem at all.

The 24fps setting is the most often used for movies to appear more natural. The problem is that many HDTVs are 60 or 120. Typically, if you want a display that properly handles 24 you will spend a premium over a 60 display. My 1080p display is 60 as well and I honestly can't imagine how a BD or HD DVD could look any better. If you feel you must have a 24fps display and have the cash I would go with one of the Toshiba Regza models as they are some of the most highly rated LCDs in the world.

Thanks again i love this site lol.... So it gives better picture but if i had like a 72hertz it would be even better than the 60 hertz correct? So is there a point to leave the option on or it doesnt matter with my tv if it is on or off i will get the same picture?

The 24fps feature makes no difference to a TV that is 60Hz. The TV will do a 3:2 pulldown. In essence what this means is that per second, it will show certain frames multiple times per second. Here is a table that illustrates it.

With 24fps, and a compatible television, there is no need for the conversion of 3:2 and added frames. You'll notice that Frame one is shown twice, then frame 2 is shown three times. Same for 3 and 4 and so on. The 3:2 pulldown causes the picture to "judder" and is especially noticeable during scenes where the camera is panning from one direction to another. The common person can't tell the difference until they've seen it for themselves. I've been told by many people here not to look for it though, or you'll see it every time. Right now, everything looks totally normal to you because it's what you've been used to seeing your whole life.
