Default DVD-Audio plays in BD-55; why?

The manual for the BD-55 says that DVD-Audio discs cannot be played. I am finding that they can - Elton John's Yellow Brick Road and Aaron Neville's Believe. Why would the manual say that?

That's good news if it works! You would have to do a comparison with a 'true' DVD-A player.
I know Panasonic made some nice DVD players like the 563A, that was designed to playback DVD-As. I can't believe it would be much of stretch to include it.
I know Oppo Digital has kind of taken over that capability in their players. Though I've read recently their proposed BD player will only play SACD, not DVD-A.

That would be Pioneer
I believe what the OP is experiencing is the secondary CD audio soundtrack included on many DVD-Audio discs. Because the BD55 will not play DVD-A.

Perhaps. But this should be very easy to confirm. The OP should check the audio signal into his reciever-- the DVD-A track and the CD tract will not be the same.

I'd not be suprised to learn it does play DVD-A. Perhaps they did not want to support DVD-A and just said it does not play them . . . There are a lot of 720P/1080I compatable (1366X768) TVs that DO accept a 1080P signal-- and several 1080P TVs that will not accept the 1080P signal. Who knows-- perhaps the OP will verify and confirm for us.

I have a lot of DVD-A discs because my car's sound system supports that format (old car)-- but they play fine on my HD-DVD player and for sure, the Oppo.

My bad! Pioneer for sure.. I know Panny had some too. The CP-72K comes to mind. I had both at different times.

For the BD55 and your HD DVD players I am almost positive what you are hearing is the CD soundtrack not the DVD Audio as it requires a special audio decoding chip that wouldn't randomly be put in those devices.

One of the biggest misconceptions about DVD-Audio is that the discs wouldn't play in a regular DVD player. While it's true you need to upgrade to play the hi-res tracks, virtually every disc also contained regular Dolby Digital and/or DTS 5.1 tracks that can be decoded the same as any DVD movie. Some even had 2.0 PCM tracks.

To my ears, equipment, and musical taste, the difference was minimal between the DVD-A tracks and the others. So much so that I've retired my DVD-A player and still enjoy the awesome 5.1 soundtracks of the discs on my current BD player.

I have a DVD-A player in my Acura TL. Sounds great, but there is hardly a selection of new music on DVD-A. And if I buy current DVD-A's they won't work in many other sources.

On a side note...the Beatles LOVE album sounds incredible on the DVD-A player in the TL. Oh man!

Ding Ding Ding!

I think this is why it is still playable in his player. Every DVD-A disc I have also has a DD/DTS 5.1 soundtrack that plays in all regular DVD players as well. What is being heard is those lossy tracks and not the lossless DVD-A track, unless Panasonic added DVD-A support with a firmware update, but I suspect they would tell owners they added this feature if they did add it.

I read this on a couple of other forums too.

To date, I can not find any BD players, high-end or otherwise, that are said to 'decode' DVD-A. Some do decode SACD. Has anyone tried SACD on the Panasonic or others which do not list SACD as a compatible disk? Wonder if it will still playback the lossy tracks like DVD-A.

Of course, no Sony branded player will decode DVD Audio, but I think Sony's arm may be longer than we realize.

Many of them contain CD audio tracks as well. And I agree that Sony's arm reaches out further than many people realize. Squash the competition.

There is no CD track on a DVD-A, the OP is almost certainly just playing the DVD-V portion of the DVD-A's he has played in his player. As Eddie501 indicates most all DVD-A's also have a DVD-V portion with Dolby Digital or DTS or PCM audio that can be played by almost any standard DVD player and all Blu-ray players.

If in fact Panasonic has made the DMP-BD55 a DVD-A player, I would be very surprised and since I have never seen any mention of this besides this post here, my opinion is the chance is almost zero it does play DVD-A.

Let me correct that - Most DVD Audio discs contain DTS and PCM audio tracks as well that can be read by any DVD player.
