Why can not get a trueHD at anypoint? I have a blueray(sony 550) and HD DVD player(A30). I have the settings set as Bitstream. I have a bluejeans 1.3a cable that is going into a Rx-v863 receiver. On the receiver it just list as PCM. The Yamaha people are saying that the player is the cause. I know that i have trueaudio dvd's, cause it has the logo on the DVD. SO where am i going wrong?

Well you MUST select it with many movies for that HD soundtrack to be chosen. Rarely is there a DtHD track that is automatically selected by default.
I am not familiar with your receiver model. Does it have a HDMI version 1.3 input and does it have the HD audio decoders built into the receiver? If not, you should select PCM output so the player is doing the decoding so you can actually hear the HD tracks. Since your receiver DOES (after looking it up) you can either have the player decode it or the receiver decode it by sending Bitstream from the HDMI connection. If you choose PCM the receiver display would likely say Multi-channel PCM or something like that, but if you send bitstream it should display the HD audio codec being used on the receiver display. Using the player though can allow dual audio tracks for PIP, and some BD-Live content that you cannot get by using the bitstream and having the receiver do the decoding. Hope this helps!

The 550 when set to MIX setting to add BD audio only mixes the core with the special feature audio. I would hope SONY would let the user select decoding in the future even to a HDMI 1.3A AVR. That way if your receiver has a decoding issue you can use the player's decoder instead. |

The S550 has the decoder but will not let you use them if the receiver can do the decoding? Sony's arrogant thinking that they know what is best for people strikes again. ![]() Thanks for this info BTW!

Mlegions, I have the same problem with my PS3, no Dolby digital via HDMI cable, but it reverts to PCM. If I use optical cable for audio, it works fine. My cable box sends Dolby digital to the amp just fine through the same HDMI cable.
Anyone have an explanation? PS3/Yamaha RXV663/Pan TH50PZ800U |

Your PS3 cannot bitstream (send the undecoded) HD audio and can only send standard DD/DTS as undecoded bitstreams. If you want the HD audio soundtracks to play you MUST set the PS3 to do the decoding and send LPCM of that track to the receiver. You could change the HDMI output to only bitstream, but then you would just get standard DD/DTS instead of HD audio. Your cable box CANNOT send HD audio period, so that is WHY it is reported as they are by your receiver. So in summary, if you want to hear HD audio with the PS3, you should leave it as it is. You are fine this way.

Thank you! There are lights bulbs turning on in my head (I'm new at this). Do I have this straight? If my Blu-ray discs have TrueHD, DTS-ES HD or DTS-Master Audio tracks, the PS3 MUST decode them and send LPCM to my receiver via HDMI. My Yamaha 663 features these decoders, but in order for them to decode, they must receive a bitstream, which the PS3 will NOT send by HDMI nor optical cable. That is why the PS3 menu lists its audio ouput as DD 5.1, DTS 5.1 (both not HD audio), and a host of LPCM's at various frequencies (to output the decoded HD audio).
I cannot find documentation that the PS3 has all these HD decoders, I assume that is a given. Well, actually I just found in my Yamaha manual that DTS-HD is a "mandatory audio standard" for Blu-ray and TrueHD is an "optional audio standard" for Blu-ray, so I guess that refers to players as well as media. I wonder if there really is a difference in HD audio? For example, with DTS 96/24, (96000 Hz X 24 bit word length X 8 channels (theoretically) = 18 Mbps, the same as that boasted by HD audio (although Blu-ray may reach 24.5 Mbps). I assume that there are other variables that come into play. Thanks again. This is starting to make sense. I'll disconnect my optical cable from my PS3. |

Now, regarding the question of who decodes what, back to the cable box (and forgive me for being for a moment in the wrong forum). I have Cox HD programming going to a Motorola DCH3416, audio output to my Yamaha 663 by optical cable (the HDMI cable goes stright to the TV so we don't have to always use the receiver). My audio menu options on the cable box are PCM or Dolby digital AC3. If I select Dolby, I set the receiver to "straight" or "pure direct". If choosing PCM, I set the receiver to "surround decode" and it diplays "Pro Logic", for example. I then get 5.1 sound, vocals to the center, etc.
Which would be the better way to leave it? Thanks again! |
