Hmmm. It certainly looks like a "malfunction" to me since the standard DD spec says 640kbps max, so ANY device that has this SHOULD meet that spec. It is more like a design defect that never should have happened since it does have the DD logo on it. Otherwise that logo means nothing IMO. It seems like Sony went with cheaper parts to save money which tells me to steer clear of their receivers. What else did the go "cheap" with in components?

Sony SHOULD repair these defective design units or make good to owners IMO.

Here is proof from Dolby that all Dolby Digital AVR must support 640kbps

All Dolby Digital equipped A/V receivers can decode a 640 kbps Dolby Digital encoded signal.

The OP should use this link you graciously provided to force Sony to either fix the receiver or offer a big discount on a replacement receiver that DOES meet the spec.

If we cannot rely on these logos put on devices that are there to provide confidence that the device WILL meet that spec then the logo program is useless IMO. I would also complain to Dolby Labs also if Sony does not make good on this issue.

Thanks again for posting this.

Changed the title of thread to include that the issue is with a Sony Receiver.

I was just helping the OP at first but then when talking to one of my brothers I found out he has the same vintage of SONY receiver. He didn't know the model number off hand.

I would appreciate it if the OP and others here would take this up with SONY, so I can direct my brother to your results.

I think is is crazy of SONY not to openly fix/replace these units. I have a older SONY receiver that plays 640kbps DD5.1 just fine.
