Default Poor audio with new PS3

I just got a PS3 mainly for Blu Ray, but I do a little bit of gaming also. I hooked it up to my Samsung LNT-4065s and the audio sounds very muted. I thought the sound was supposed to be phenomenal on these. I have it hooked up straight to the TV with HDMI, no surround system yet. Am I doing something wrong?

Broadcast TV sounds normal as before, usually set bet/15-18, but I have to turn it up to almost 30 to get the same level when I play BLu-rays. I made no changes to the setup regarding audio and I double checked them on the PS3 and my TV, and nothing stands out ot me as being off. Anybody have any ideas?

TIA,
D

BTW, the picture is beyond my expectations.

Change the output to 2 channel PCM on the PS3 setup menus.

It sounds like you are sending 5.1 channels and you are losing the center channel being directed to the TV speakers so the dialog is very low. Is this what you are hearing?

Thank you for the reply...

I checked it and it had dolby 5.1 checked(I did that manually trying to fix my problem, but to no avail) It had set up the audio automatically at the settings you suggested, but at 44 khz and 48 khz. I changed them to the highest khz(192 I believe) and it sounds much better. But it gave me the warning of possibly damaging my speakers. Should I change it back?

Also, before I made these changes, I had downloaded MLB 08 The Show Demo and I got no sound while playing the game. Is that also because of my settings? I haven't had the chance to go back and check the game again.(the wife's using the TV now)

Thanks again for the help...

Scratch the part about it sounding better at the higher khz, there was no difference. It just sounds muted compared to the TV. Any other suggestions...

Also, removing the dolby 5.1 fixed the MLB problem...

I bought a PS3 40GB about a month ago, have watched several blu-rays on it (looks great) and have suddenly been sucked in to the COD4 craze. I cannot believe how incredible video games look, especially COD4. WOW.

Never had an issue with sound with my PS3 out of the box...sorry to hear your struggles.

Have you used a different HDMI source with that display? I am going to say most likely, the display does a very poor job with audio input over HDMI. There are no issues like you describe caused by a properly working PS3.
