Default PS3 Problem with some DTS-HD MA 7.1 movies?

There has only been a few replies on forums about no sound coming out of the rear surround speakers....on some LionsGate and New Line movies.

Here is part of one post on HighDefDigest.

I have downloaded Firmware update 2.3 for my PS3. The purpose of me sending this support request is to make Sony aware of a problem with the latest firmware update. I do not need technical advice, nor to be given instructions as to how to properly connect my PS3 to my surround sound receiver.

My receiver(Onkyo TXSR 705) is compatible with Linear PCM 7.1. I have it properly connected via a proper HDMI cable.

I have downloaded version 2.30 which should allow DTS-HD Master Audio and DTS-HD High Resolution Audio output to be supported.

Here is the issue: DTS-HD MA decoding of some 7.1 DTS-HD MA encoded movies do not output all 7.1 channels from the PS3... It only outputs 5.1 channels, which is INCORRECT.

This DOES NOT OCCUR on all 7.1 DTS-HD MA Movies. I have tested all Blu-Ray movies with 7.1 DTS-HD MA sound. The following movies with 7.1 DTS-HD MA codecs do not output all 7.1 channels from the PS3:

"The Condemned" (LionsGate)
"Pan's Labyrinth" (New Line)
"Rush Hour 3" (New Line)
"Shoot em up" (New Line)
"HairSpray" (New Line)

PLEASE DO NOT TELL ME TO CHECK MY SETTINGS.

Is Sony aware of the problem?

Is this an issue with certain 7.1 DTS-HD MA mixes being decoded by the PS3?

Is this something that Sony can and will fix in future firmware updates?

This forum doesn't allow me to post the link, it takes out part of it. To make the link work you need to remove the '"." from high.def.digest and make it highdefdigest.

My google search

A part of another post:

The New Line titles are mixed for a setup with 2 pairs of "side" surrounds, and this information is in the track. There is supposed to be some sort of DSP capability which would process the surround channels to mimic the setup in which it was mixed, but the PS3 doesn't do this. It's just decompressing the channels and assumes a setup with back surrounds. However, in the case of titles mixed for configurations with 2 pairs of side surrounds, the PS3 is just sending everything to the single pair of side surrounds, because that way it sounds more like the original mix. Sending those extra two channels to the back speakers would deviate more from what the producer intended.

To make the link work you need to take out the "." between avs and forum.

It seem like this problem only effects the ps3, when playing a 7.1 DTS sound track and only on New Line and Lionsgate films were the DTS mix was done by Mi Casa Multimedia.

Can anyone on here reproduce this problem?

this happened on Crank too... on the display it said 7.1 but the backs were hardly used and the side surrounds had most of the sounds... I thought it was my system but happy to know this is a firmware problem. Will watch shoot em up tonite to see if I have the same problem

I incur the same problem. PS3 outputs DTS-HD MA 7.1 in 5.1 mode. I cheked it in 'Shut them high" and in "Hairspay"
However if you play a blu-tay disk that has codec of PCM 7.1 such as "3:10 to Yuma" then PS3 out 7.1 properly. Does Sony still has problems with DTS-HD evn after the release of V2.30???

The PS3 does have options to set different output formats over hdmi/optical. I don't have a 7.1 system to check myself, but have you made sure 7.1 is enabled in the settings?

I could be way off, but if it is a new setting with the firmware, It may just have your old settings saved...

I have watched several 7.1 titles without having any of the above problems. I do have the latest FW on the PS3 though so maybe that's the difference.
