Default PS3 wont play Blu-Ray movies

Hi all, sorry if this has been posted already, I didn't see it on the first few pages. I've had my PS3 for a while now (80GB US version) and have been watching Blu-Ray movies perfectly until just now. I put in "Walk Hard" and it wont recognize it.. nothing happens at all, I put in a few other Blu-Ray movies I have and I get the same thing. I put in "There will be blood" on reg. DVD and it works fine. I put in the "Ratchet & Clank" PS3 game and it works fine as well. The only thing it wont play now is Blu-Ray movies. Any ideas?? I have the latest firmware and I have the 1080/24 option off as well. Thanks!

I just tried doing the "Restore default settings" option and still nothing. The Region stuff is set for US and everything. Just not sure why The Blu-Ray games work, but not the Blu-Ray movies.

The only way of know of with the PS3 denying you playing a BD movie, but letting you play some PS3 games, is if you have it hooked up with the composite cables. This happened with one of my friends PS3s.

It's hooked up via HDMI. I just watched some movies on it a few days ago and it was fine.

I figured that wasn't your issue, just thought I'd throw out my 2 cents. Hopefully someone will chime in to help.

If I were you I'd just call Sony support and explain your issue.

Reckon I should... I just tried all the discs again and "Walk Hard" worked, but the others didn't then when I tried to play "Walk Hard" again it wouldn't play.. oy!

Well I tried some more and I got most of them to work.. didn't really do anything besides take them out and put them back in a few times. One movie still doesn't want to play and, as weird as it sounds, seems to stop the others from working for a little bit after I try it. It's "Dragon Ball Z: Brolly" This one will not work at all, and it's the correct region (all my movies are from Netflix) Once I take it out and put another movie it, they don't want to work for a little bit. After a few tries they'll start right up. So as of right now all but the DBZ movie work fine.. Weird.

Welcome to the forum DeadPlasmaCell!

Try running the data side of the discs under very hot water for about 30 seconds then dry them with a lint free cloth. I have heard about dirty discs causing this and sometimes there is a "film" on discs that does not seem noticeable but it can mess with reading the data payer on some discs.

Also look for a slight hairline crack on the out edge going towards the center. I have only had ONE disc not play in my PS3 and THAT was the reason.

Good luck!

Thumbs up

Thanks for the tip PFC5, but I've already sent the disc back to Netflix as damaged so I can't try that out. They did send me a replacement disc today and it worked perfect, the rest of the movies play fine as well. Crazy how a flawed disc can cause the whole thing to glitch out the way it did. Ne who thanks for all the help gents!
