Default Sharp HP-BD20U sending TrueHD/DTS-HD to Onkyo TX-SR605

I have a Sharp HP-BD20U Blu-ray DVD player, which claims it can send out TrueHD and DTS-HD audio signals directly.

I also have an Onkyo TX-SR605 Receiver which has the claim-to-fame of supporting TrueHD and DTS-HD input signals...

I'm a bit confused as to why it is that when playing Blu-ray discs that have these types of audio tracks - the receiver doesn't show up as using TrueHD or DTS-HD signals? I know I've read in a few places "Blu-ray players aren't sending these signals yet", but I was under the impression this one was (from Sharp's site where it says it uses those formats)...

Help?

Do you have the audio output setting on AUTO or PCM?

With it on the PCM setting the player will do the decoding and send it to the receiver as PCM and already decoded.

Try changing the setting to AUTO (page 34 in the manual) and see if that gets you the HD audio bitstream or just standard DD/DTS output. I own this model BD player and I cannot remember if it even outputs HD audio as bitstream.

It might not output HD audio in bitstream, but it does have HDMI version 1.3, so it should be able to output HD audio as an undecoded bitstream. I want it to do the decoding for me so that was more important, since I have already upgraded my receiver 3 times in 3 years. I jumped off that roller coaster for the next 2-3 years (hopefully).

Here is a link to the spec sheet at Sharp:

http://www.sharpusa.com/products/Mod...,1932-,00.html

I am not sure what settings you might need to change on the receiver end though if any.

Hope this helps!

It actually is already set to AUTO. :-\

With your receiver, does it display "TrueHD" / "DTS-HD"???

When you play a Blu-ray movie, what does the Onkyo display? (DD,DD+...)

My receiver does not decode the HD audio, which is WHY I wanted a BD player that does decode the HD audio.

Maybe someone else with this player and/or a Onkyo receiver that does can help with the settings on the Onkyo to help get the receiver to do the decoding.

Sorry I couldn't be more help.

It is my understanding that this player does NOT bitsteam the advanced audio codecs. It just decodes them.(As per reading the owners thread on another forum) What you need to do is use the 5.1 analog outs to get Dolby True HD and uncompressed PCM. I'm sure that your audio reciever has multichannel inputs doesn't it? Most older recievers do. Then your Sharp player can decode them and send them as PCM to your audio receiver. Unfortunately this player does not decode DTS-HD MA.

I have the 605, just set it up and like others cant get it to play true hd or dts hd. I have a sony 350 bluray connected via hdmi to the game/tv hd connector on the reciever, but wont show other playing options on the reciever. The best sound option i have is prologic 2 movie?..
Do i need to connect a optical? Or may be just smash it up and be done with it...lol

You want to use HDMI for audio. The Sony BDP-S350 does bitstream the advanced audio codecs and the Onkyo TX-SR605 does decode DTS-HD MA and Dolby TrueHD so all you need to do is have the Sony bitstream over HDMI. There are menu options on the Sony BDP-S350 to make the selections but I don't recall the specific choices although it should be something similar to HDMI primary pass-through or HDMI bitstream. There may also be a required menu setup with the Onkyo receiver but I don't own it to suggest what you might need to do, hopefully someone else does if you can't get DTS-HD MA and Dolby TrueHD to light up on the receiver after setting the BDP-S350 properly.

Oh ya, I am the forum's designated component smasher so if you decide to smash it up, you need to send it to me to handle the demolition. I am qualified to handle highly technical setup of equipment on sidewalks and driveways and I own the proper U.L. certified sledgehammer.

To the OP:

Welcome to the Forum. I own the '605. It's connected to a first-generation Panasonic DMP-BD10A Blu-ray player which DOES NOT bitstream TrueHD signals (but DOES internally decode them to multichannel PCM over HDMI or analog; I am running HDMI), nor does it do Master Audio AT ALL. I am uncertain about your PLAYER, but I have experience with the '605...

Some of what Jake said above is true -- while the 605 WILL decode Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio, you need to go into its SETUP MENU and select "LISTENING MODES" for each source. Find the source you have selected for your BD player input (on mine, it's "DVD") and make sure Dolby TrueHD is set to Dolby TrueHD, and the same for DTS Master Audio. Now, beyond this, we need to make sure your BLU-RAY PLAYER has the capabilities of sending RAW BITSTREAMS of the new surround codecs so your 605 can handle them and decode them, where you'll see "Dolby TrueHD" or "DTS MSTR AUDIO" light up on its front display -- on MY system, it does not because my Panasonic player DOES NOT bitstream these signals...

Now, if your BD PLAYER can bitstream TrueHD and Master Audio, set the OUTPUT for these surround codecs to BITSTREAM in your player, but if they CANNOT bitstream them, set TrueHD and Master Audio to "PCM" in the player (if your player supports both). The biggest complaint the internet home theater forums experience from Onkyo receiver owners is that their front panels aren't lighting up with the "Dolby TrueHD" or "DTS Master Audio" indicators -- this ONLY happens when the signals are bitstreamed from a player.

If your PLAYER is decoding the TrueHD signals, as PFC explained to you, the 605 will be seeing MULTICHANNEL PCM coming into it over HDMI or analog; however you have the connection made. If this setup is done properly, you should be seeing "MULTICH" on the Onkyo's display panel when playing TrueHD soundtracks on Blu-rays, if you set the "Multichannel PCM" LISTENING MODE in the Onkyo to "Multich" which I was told is the best way to play back the decoded PCM tracks...

Please let me know if you need more assistance...

The original poster can't get bitstream from the Sharp player to light up the Dobly TrueHD or DTS-HD MA audio indicators on his TX-SR605 so I suspect he has moved on and won't be back to this thread.

He could at least tell us that he read and understood these tutorials of sorts -- plus, it's important for him to realize that getting the indicators on his 605 to illuminate isn't the ONLY way to experience the tracks...
