Default Total newbie BR audio questions

OK guys
– I will be getting a Blu-ray player this weekend. Not sure of the best way to connect it to my stuff. I want to up convert SD DVD and watch new Blu-ray movies. I know squat about all the different audio formats and how the BR players send out audio etc. I want the best sound I can get with my current setup.
I have an LG HDTV that has HDMI inputs and one optical “output” that works just fine with digital audio out via hdmi audio “in” from my cable box on HD broadcasts. I have the Onkyo tx-sr603x – This receiver does not have any hdmi inputs but it has lots of optical inputs and sounds great with my current SD dvd player and the optical in from my TV. I know that the new BR movies have different audio than DVD – Will I need a new receiver that has HDMI support or can I connect the BR player to the TV via HDMI and to the receiver via optical? – do they send audio out via optical AND HDMI at the same time?
I am just worried that the TV may not pass audio correctly to the optical output via the HDMI Blu-ray input. I want to make sure the Blu-ray will sound at least as nice as my dvd player and the digital audio I get from Comcast on HD programming.
Can anyone recommend a player that will not be obsolete the day I buy it and still work with my setup? – How would you connect everything given my equipment?
Thanks!
JJK

My surround receiver also does not have any HDMi outputs. I run optical to the receiver and HMDi to the TV for video. Just turn the sound down on the TV. Works great.
