199 for a drive, not a player, but pretty cool. You would still need a video card that supports HDMI to connect it to the HDTV, and a fancy sound card to support the audio formats. Unless you already have that extra stuff, why not just pick up a PS3?

This wil not effect the format war, imo. Most people don't watch movies via their computor and if they did doesn't Toshiba have many HD DVD drives already out there?

If there was a reason for HD-DVD drives for computers, then it makes sense to have the other format available. After all this is a format war. IMO, to compete in this format war, Blu-ray has to show they can accomadate any situation that HD-DVD already has.

I believe we are going to see some fantastic deals in the near future from both sides. I really think both sides want to win the sales war for Q4 2007, especially Sony. I for one hope to see some more great sales.

Agreed. It is just that out of all the people that I know that love movies, non of them use their computor as a player, as far as I know.

a $199 Blu-Ray drive, I understand how that would interest a small segment (very small) that would love to add it to their computer, but wouldn't it be most useful for storage purposes?

Surely it will not be capable of 1.1 specs unless you build the necessary components around it into your computer, of course I suppose it wouldn't be difficult for it to meet the 2.0 specs since just about every computer is ethernet capable anymore.

I think Apple plans to add a Blu-Ray drive to their computers in the future and Dell already offers one but it costs over $4000 for the computer it is in (wow)!

And yes, HD DVD drives are coming out on several computers right as we speak.

Personally, I don't watch any movies on my desktop or laptop, both are equipped for DVD playback. To me it's a waste for either HD-DVD or Blu-ray on my computers.

Take Care

It's a start for BD, but it does suck due to the fact that it's profile will not support newer titles.

I think the article refers to it as only a 'player' capable of playback only, not burning.

You can get the LG Blu-ray/DVD/Hd-DVD combo drive for your computer for $272.

I made a thread a few weeks ago about the sale.
