Default What and when would be best to buy Blu Ray?

I was thinking about getting a Blu Ray player, but I'm not sure which player I'd get or when is the best time to buy it.

I'm not a big gamer, so buying a PS3 isn't a must for me. But if the price difference between a PS3 and a SAL is only $50 or so, then I'd probably just opt getting the PS3.

Plus, if I'm correct, the Blu Ray Players that you can get in the $450-$500 range aren't going to be Profile 1.1 compliant anyway, right? I'd definitely want Profile 1.1 abilities if I'm going to shell out around $500 for a Blu Ray. But I'd also like to get a SAL if I could somehow get it for $100+ less than the PS3.

And then I'm not sure when exactly I should buy it. Does anyone think prices are going to go down on Blu Ray players anytime soon? I guess that kinda depends on HD DVD players going down in price as well... and I wouldn't guess that price cuts would be until around Christmas time. But if I do decide get a Blu Ray, I probably wouldn't want to wait that long. So I don't know if I should wait a month or two to get one, because prices in these format wars seem to change every week.

Depends on what you're looking for. If you are looking for interactive features beyond what you get on DVD, wait til after 10/31 to buy a player or get a PS3. If you don't care about interactivity, get one now.

Does anyone know if PS3 will be Profile 1.1 compatible? I think I read it would be theoretically compatible with 1.1, but no one knows for sure if it actually will be.

It's capable of 1.1 and 2.0 and I see no reason for Sony to hold back and not have java firmware updates for it.

Oct. 31st isn't that far away and one thing I'd consider is that the existing players will probably have some substantial price drops as stores clear inventory for the profile 1.1 players. As Glow says if the interactive capabilities aren't that important to you there's not much reason to wait.

Several things to consider before buying a BD player with the impending Profile 1.1 change over. Here is my take on it:

1. Without a Profile 1.1 BD player, you will be limited in playback of a lot of potentially cool interactive features. Studios are just starting to do this with HD DVD. Even though I have never been a big "extras" fan, I am already starting to look forward to what can be done with these new formats based on this link (Provided by Jerry), which is just the tip of the iceberg IMO:

http://www.videobusiness.com/article/CA6461151.html

2. The longer you wait, the lower the prices will be when you DO buy. This is generally true with all CE devices, but as was pointed out, if interactive features still do not matter, then you could get clearance prices on Profile 1.0 BD players.

3. If you are a gamer then buying the PS3 is a slam dunk as the BD player to buy. I think there will be another price drop for the Holidays. If you already own a PS2 and want to play them on the PS3 then you should jump while the current (BIG) inventory of 60GB models are still around since they have the backward compatible Emotion Chip. The 8/2007 replacement 80GB model will be software based for backward compatibility and will not do as good a job with backward compatibility.

Summary:

Time is on your side by waiting except with the backward compatibility issue on the PS3, but the inventory levels are still high on that so you still have time for even that.

Hope this helps!

For me, the time to buy was 2 weeks ago. $100 PS3 price drop, plus 5 free blu-ray movies just sealed the deal.

I don't see any other price drops for the PS3 being very likely, unless the 80GB DOES come out at $599, then I could see them dropping that to $499 around the holidays.

The right time for you to buy? When you can afford it and are ready to enjoy even more movies in High Def.
