Funny. It might be the BD movie you were watching previously played a part in the fan levels. What was that first movie used?

Casino Royale.
And a quick off topic question....does BD have bookmarks (or equivalent) like HDDVD?

I watched that last month and do not recall any increase in fan noise while playing it, but I had the sound system cranked while watching it so a burglar could have broke in and I would not have heard them.

don"t take this the wrong way but you sound overly anal. You must be really trying to focus on the sound of the PS3 to even come close to hearing it above the sound of a movie. I sit about 6 feet away and I have not heard it's fan even once since I got mine. I don't know but like Glow said it's probably the movie or something but come on I know that it's not bad at all, if it really is that noticable it must be defective because I have yet to even notice my fan, it's not just quiet it is virtually silent.

Either the OP has the ears of a dog, or maybe the store has a bad batch of players. How long have you had your PS3 Semp1? I am wondering if they change the fan used in the newer PS3s, and this could be part of the problem.

I don't think I have super hearing, but definitely sensitive hearing. I have a hard time sleeping if I can hear a cricket
The fan didn't even bother me during Click, but for some reason the fan went into overdrive with Casino Royale, with two different systems...a level of noisy I haven't yet been able to achieve with a game. It seems ok now. I'll rent a few more BDs and see how it goes.

I have had mine since April so it is one of the newer ones and I own Casino Royale and have never heard the fan go nuts now after extreme time on and use maybe ill hear the fan but thats only happened like once and by powering it off and then putting it back on remedied the problem. I would return it and go buy it from another store like I said mine is silent no sound at all.

and I do everything on my PS3 for example I am on it right now so you can imagine how many hours a day it is on for...... but seriously one of the selling points of the PS3 is how silent it is and Casino Royale does not really use any advanced Java... Definately no where near as advanced as POTC... and the PS3 handles those with no problem what so ever. I would also expect to not see any change in the fan used for the system at least not until the 80gb comes out which will be a cheaper manufactured system with all ps2 and ps1 components taken out which is why they are phasing the 60gb out. the 80gb their going to charge 600 for make the conumer feel like they are getting more bang for the buck but really they are getting a much cheaper made system .

I had to add the extra Fan to my PS3 to cool the darn thing down! I made the mistake of putting it in with my Office HT setup in a media center...............
I could roast hot dogs on the heat this darn thing puts out.... So now the extra fan is quite audible even with the manual fan speed adjustment turned all the way down..! So there will be no movies played on that thing. ..or the movie's sound would have to be as loud as my son's games, to get past the ever present and annoying fan noise!!

Just to update I've have since moved my entertainment center to another room (much, much bigger) and have rented a few more BD's and the fan noise is barely noticeable during quiet scenes
I'm quite pleased now!

I don't own a 360, but I've played multiplayer games on my friend's 360 and that thing is LOUD. That's the #1 reason I don't own one and won't until they start selling them with the new 65nm chip.

Yeah, I don't blame you, it's pot luck at the moment as to whether you get a quiet 360 or not, there are definitely some on the market though. Some are actually as quiet/quieter than the PS3.
