What is HD?

When DVD first came out, it was Sharp and Sony who were the lead players in getting the format off the ground.
Back again with a new format Bluray Disc, giving us High Definition quality and more space than any other technology offered by anyone. HD-DVD might be the slightly faster product to market and might be cheaper to manufacture, but its Sony who will lead and win the battle, this time around. You waiting to hear why? The word Playstation ring any bells? Was it not the product that bought DVD to the mass markets? Well as Sony's Playstation 3 will feature a BDROM drive, I'm sure that this will make sure they have the competition killed before 2006 is finished. Not just this though, as you already know HD DVD have backing of Hollywood studios such as Universal and Paramount, Sony don't have that large support from film studios, but what they do have, is a huge marketing engine, ready to drive Bluray forward and with HP incorporating it into their PC's and if HP are joining with Sony for the ride, I can guarantee Dell will too. Which means Sony wins the market of computing. Lets think of this as the US Election, your states are won by a political party and the one with the majority will undoubtly win. Same goes with this, Sony has already won the Game Console Format, The Computing Format and has half of the film studio format, along with that, they have all these major technology companies behind them, including yet again Sharp, one of the leading companies in the form of DVD players and LCD Displays. I would say that my prediction is that Bluray will come out champion but I am 78% sure of this, so there is a margin of error, if HDDVD is not completely wiped out after the first 2 years, then that margin will increase. Make sure you remember my prediction, then in the future I can laugh and say I was right. Oh and all these people who keep talking about Blueray not being able to play dvds as well, is wrong, the player support this and also the blueray discs being made now are going to be able to store dvd content and blueray content on one disc, so changing from one system to another will be easy and you won't waste any money doing so! In fact you'll be able to watch HD content on your old titles when you switch! |

I wouldn't say its an urban legend. When the PS2 came out, I swear I couldn't go anywhere without seeing a dvd with this sticker on it "Playstation 2 compatible". I didn't think too much about it then, it pissed me off actually, because I was thinking "DVD is a standard, of course its compatible!" but for all those people who bought a PS2 they all of a sudden could take part in watching movies AND games from that one machine. DVD players at the time were still around 300 dollars for something from sony. Being able to play movies on your game system all of a sudden made the average consumer consider becoming an early adopter of a game system that they usually wait to buy 2-3 years later. And because the PS1 won the 32-bit console system war, people felt safe with their purchase. marketing the DVD playback was the smartest move they ever made, and announcing blu-ray compatablity this early on, will hopefully spark the same early adoption of the masses that we saw with the PS2 and DVD.

Um...yeah...riiiiight....
I don't recall any non-SONY movies having a PS2 compatible labe.... PS2 had little effect on pushing the DVD format. The statistics already show that. Everything else is just wishful thinking by SONY fanbois. The PS2 when it was released was just a shoddy DVD player without a remote control so they couldn't sell it for a higher price like the competing standalone units. |

It would also be interesting to see what the Xbox2 specs will be since this time around, the Xbox2/PS3 releases will be closer to one another then the last round when PS2 had a two year head-start. If Xbox2 ends up being an HD-DVD console, then the OP's assertion would be even less compelling.

Sony always wins? Can anyone say Betamax. Betamax was a superior format but VHS won. I think we are going to see more of a DVD+R/ -R format war with the end result being a set that can play both formats as well as DVD's and CD's.

You are so wrong. The original creater of the DVD format was not Sony and Sharp. That could not be further from the truth. As a matter of fact, Sharp was not even on the radar for DVD. They were a non-factor. Sony and Phillips created one version of DVD and Toshiba and Warner Brothers created another version. Too make a long story short, they had and meeting of the minds and we now have the DVD.
