Default Which Blu Ray Player Should I Buy?

I'm looking to buy a blu ray player to go with my HD-A2 HD DVD player. I'm considering the Samsung BD-P1200 or the next generation Panasonic DMP-BD10A (do out soon, $599.00 and includes 5 BD discs in the box). I like the Panasonic deal, but the Samsung and it's Silicon Optix Reon chip is very tempting. I hear that the samsung is probably the best up converting player available (anyone know if this is really true?). I'm curious to hear opinions. I also know Sony has a second generation player coming too. my price limit is about $600.00. Let me hear what you think.

Sorry but I do not want a PS3. I want a stand alone player that also does a good job of up converting standard DVD's.

The Samsung is probably the best BD player for upscaling SD DVDs, but I think the HD-XA2 is slightly better according to a comment in the Secrets review of the 1200.

I would say PQ would favor the 1200, but the audio would favor the Panasonic since it DOES now have the new HD audio decoders built into it.. Just an FYI, the so called "new" Panasonic is just the same 1G player with the HD audio decoder firmware firmware applied at the factory and a 50% price drop. It is NOT a 2G player like you mentioned.

Hope this helps!

Well if you have to go with a stand alone, and you have to buy one right now- I'd probably go with the Sammy. With that said- you'll be taking a gamble on whether or not you'll be able to enjoy BD Java support by buying anything on the market now other than the PS3. It would be highly irresponsible for any manufacturer to release a G2 player that won't allow BD-J features- but I wouldn't put it past them.

You might want to wait a couple more months if you can, and see what the story is with the G2 players regarding BD-J support. The hope would be that a firmware update will enable those features down the road.

I'm waiting for the new Panny BD10A. If you're an AVSForum member, Robert at Value Electronics is accepting advance orders on this one for $599.

As a Blu-Ray player the PS3 is fine, and is future proof.

NOTHING is "future proof"!!!!!!

Especially with CE products. The PS3 CAN be fairly close, but will have hardware limits as well, and is totally dependent on Sony spending the money to provide updates for what CAN be upgraded. So far they are doing a very good job, and I expect that to continue, but for how long?

When it comes to updates, the PS3 will be priortized over every other Blu-Ray player.

I agree but the PS3 is NOT future proof. Nothing is in CE products. It is like saying a computer bought today is future proof, on worse. Computers can be rebuilt using the case, etc to rebuild it piece by piece. The same cannot be said for the PS3, so it is even LESS future proof than computers and they are not either without rebuilding one.

Actually, I think Panasonic is the leader of firmware upgrades. The DMP-BD10 is up to firmware version 2.0, which enabled TruHD lossless audio.

I agree the two best BD players are Panasonic's DMP-BD10A and Samsung's BD-P1200. Personally I prefer the Panasonic player for $599.

The Panasonic is definetly tempting, but I'm not opposed to waiting to see what else comes about. I wish I could find out more about the new Sony player thats coming. I know one thing for sure I do not want a PS3 in my home theater. There is only one thing I do not know about the Panasonic and that's how well it does upscaling compared to the Samsung. I wish the Panny had that Reon VX chip in it, then it would be a no brainer. Does anyone know if any of the newer Blu Ray players will support DTS Master Audio and Dolby True HD (lossless formats?). I do not want to buy to soon and have something come out a month later that is better at the same price or less. The 5 free movies in the Panasonic box with the player is awesome, and they're good movies. This and the fact that the price is cheaper than the Samsung is the reason I'm kind of leaning toward the Panasonic unless I find out about something coming thats better or cheaper. I definetly want the latest decoders and Java support. I don't want to get stuck with a player that doesn't support all the features or isn't firmware upgradeable because of product limitation or a crappy company that's to lazy to do the updates. Does anyone know the estimated release date of these new players (Panasonic, Sony, and any others anyone has heard of)? Thanks for the help.
