Welcome to the forum!

What would be the purpose of spending that time/money when the BD players already play the SD DVD version and you would get no benefit from transferring an SD DVD to a BD formated disc?

In fact, the PQ would look worse because the video would be compressed AGAIN by the BD video codec used to encode it for BD. Remember, BD video is compressed something like 90-95% from the original source, so there would be nothing to be gained just like saving a JPG file multiple times would degrade the PQ more each time it was re-compressed.

Well, right now HD DVD is the cheapest. Though why not just up-convert your DVD collection to say 1080p Will save you time & money without loss in PQ/AQ IMO.

Neither format has inexpensive recorders and at this point, the only HD DVD recorders available in the US are built into laptop computers.

Realsitically, recordability is not of much interest to anyone at this point (Oblioman excepted ).

I don't anticipate ever transferring DVD's to any new format, Blu-ray, HD DVD or other. DVD quality is served great by just using a DVD and no removable media in the future will make more sense for me. I have no interest personally in transferring 5 movies or 6 movies to a single BD but maybe there is a market segment that does. First of all, after reading the DMCA, I don't think it would even be legal if the DVD used copy protection.

I want a new successful format for the highest quality video and highest quality audio, either of these new formats work great and I hope one survives and all software providers get behind it an things start to move forward. I purchase more music discs than I do video discs and these formats can beat DVD for video and SACD/DVD-A for audio so I have high hopes for the future for a much smaller than DVD and CD but still significant market. If Blu-ray recorders and recordable media are ever affordable that is great but I am likely stuck with DVR's and video tape for recording HD, my investment is huge and not worth much on the market and it works well enough for me.

I badly want an HD DVD recorder to burn HD Tivo material (mainly sporting events). Hopefully prices and media will be reasonable pretty soon.

How much money are you willing to spend and how much effort?

Toshiba has two, pretty amazing, standalone HD DVD recorders that have been selling in Japan for months.

Probably $1000 at the most, and $10 for the blank media. I'll probably wait until they're available here, but it depends on how long that may be. But I'm going to check out those players you refer to...

Is the RD-RX7 HD DVD Recorder one of the players you were refering to? I really like that you can also use DVD blanks to write HD on. That's a really cool feature. I wonder how many minutes will fit on a DVD-9 without losing noticable PQ from standard HD sat/cable material?

These are the ones I meant:

http://www.toshiba.co.jp/about/press/2007_06/pr1202.htm

but apparently they now have the RD-RX7 you linked to and the RD-A301 ($875 with HDD and dual tuners).

http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/1...-dvd-recorder/

You can get 30GB DL HD DVD-R for less than $20 at this point, but if you want something in the $10 range, 15GB SL HD DVD-R is the best you can do.

Thanks. Since I can record HD onto DVD-r media, the HD DVD media price isn't as important at this stage, since I can use those as well. It's really nice to have that flexibility since the DVD-r media is so cheap. It looks like I'll be buying a recorder sometime next year.
