It's just hardware folks. Do the research and the math and use the hardware.

I rip everything to my hard drives anyway so the media it came on does not concern me much.

A computer can play any damn thing so when you go to spend more than $400 - $500 on a device think of getting a media center instead.

This Blu-Ray HD-DVD nonsense was amusing for a while but really, you people have largely lost it.

I suspect the last thing I would ever buy for my HT would be a computer-based media center.

I like convenience, simplicity and style in CE products and am willing to pay for that. I can't imagine any product based on a GP computer and software that would be tolerable.

While there is a whole group of people that would vehemently disagree with me, there's an even bigger group who doesn't and that's reflected in sales.

I have never used a media center for music or video playback. A computer can not play SACD for one thing, the format I play more than any other.

But they will probably remain at twice the price as the HD DVD players (for the next year anyway) because Toshiba has promised to keep lowering the price of the HD DVD players.

We shall see.

I was the only one that I recall saying in January that HD DVD players would cost less than $200.00 before year end. I think everyone pretty much assumes this will happen at least with a Chinese player and now I think possibly with the Toshiba 3G players also.

I also think that there very well might be a BD player at $300.00 before year end as well.

I hope this is the case. I would like to get a cheap HD DVD player just for Universal exclusive discs. But cheap in US doesn't mean cheap in Oz unfortunately.

Cheap in Arkansas is not the same as cheap in New York either.

The format which comes out with the cheapest recorder and blank discs will win.. as many of us will be able to use new computer programs to transfer our dvd collections to the format..

I have never seen any evidence a PC DVD drive can be tampered with to enable reading SACD. Do you have any link?
