Let me ask you this, and I worked for IBM from 1980 to 1984 - if they really thought they had a winner on their hands - wouldn't they have developed the product the way they were doing in the Main Frame product line? - all propriatary. . . .protect at all costs. |

I visited the Boca Raton facility in the PC time frame. There's no question IBM corporate HQ wasn't convinced the PC would go anywhere, that's why they did it the way they did--off the shelf hardware, subcontract the software. It was cheaper and quicker and the PC group was trying to keep a low profile on the P+L so they didn't get the rug pulled out from under them.
By the time they were convinced there really was a market, they had already sealed their fate. IMHO, it was sealed no matter what they did. If they had made a proprietary, closed system, it wouldn't have gone anywhere in the marketplace, it would have just been another IBM minicomputer, only based on an Intel microprocessor instead of an IBM core. What they should have done was pay MicroSoft for the exclusive license to MS DOS (i.e. buy it from them with exclusive rights to use), then license MS DOS to other PC manufacturers. That way, IBM would have made all the money licensing MS DOS instead of MicroSoft and the world would be a very different place... |

All excellent points, as well as your hindsight views. But, as you said . . . that's not what happened. IBM knew it's market every which way to Sunday. They had been selling in it for close to 40 years . . .Corporate America. The closest the "average consumer" ever got to buying an IBM product was a used IBM Selectric Typewriter. IBM had zero experience selling to the general public and their decisions reflect their inexperience with that market. Just to put it all in prospective . . . at the time the PC came out . . . . I was 6 mos into selling Color Dumb Terminals, for the first time. Previously, all were Monochrome. |

No, I'd say you were wrong and you're not man enough to admit it and bow out gracefully. Yep - that sounds about right.

You were wrong and have no fucking balls. If you did, you would man up and say, "You know, I was wrong. I had the two mixed up." But no, you can't do that. You're pathetic.
