I had decided not to buy a HD DVD player until prices come down quite a bit. I also thought about buying a Playstation 3 but I am not much of a game player, I would only be interested in a few of the games or I should say "type of games" racing, boxing maybe some war games. So I kinda decided that I wouldn't buy a Playstation either because it wouldn't be worth it for jut a few games BUT
I understand that it also plays Blue Ray movies. My question is Do you think a Playstation 3 is considered a quality blue Ray player? if it is and I wanted one anyways it would be much cheaper to buy a Playstation 3 than a Blue Ray DVD player because I would be buying something that would have 2 uses. BUT if the Blue ray player part of it is not good quality then I'd be wasting my money. What do you Blue Ray experts think???? |

The PS3's Blu-Ray player is one of the best on the market right now! Home & Theater Mag. gave it higher ratings than many of its other Blu-Ray compaions! I have it and cannot think of a cheaper way to get an elite BD player! Go for it, you'll thank me later!

Even if your only a casual gamer at best, the PS3 is a great option for Blu-Ray, for it's price, nothing can match it.

The PS3 gets generally good reviews for both video and audio quality and is fairly "future proof" because of it's network upgrade ability.
One drawback I don't like is it uses Bluetooth so if you're into universal remotes you won't be able to use it since they're ir or rf. I've heard of a work around to make it work but think it's fairly complex. Compared to the pricing of stand alone Blu-ray players though, it's a real deal and who knows you might even get into gaming. |

I'm not in to gaming either, but I have been known to dominate some Gran Turismo in my day. I bought my PS3 just for the Blu-Ray player. I have grown to get used to using the controller as the remote. It's sorta like when the mouse first came out for the pc. Weird at first but second hand nature now. What I do like about the PS3 is the hard drive. I have a lot of videos and music and photos on it. It's cool to see them on the big plasma. I still haven't figured out how to transfer files via the wireless yet though. I do have a couple of games but I don't play them much. My little boy mostly plays some old PS2 games on it.

I have a nice Toshiba 42 " LCD that is 1080P and love it, I looked at Plasma's but I watch way too many News and Sports programs and the constant tickers and logos that they fill the screen with made me chose LCD over plasma. I know everyone says they have ways to prevent the burn in but when you ask them if they will guarantee NO BURN IN.... they all say NO !!!!!
Anyways I just went out and bought the PS3, I live 2 minutes from a Wal-Mart and they had one new "not returned" one in stock so I grabbed it. Thanks to everyone who replied to my post, I've always bought Sony because I have had great luck with them so I thought the Blue Ray player would be good too but had to ask. The only reason I didn't buy a Sony LCD was I couldn't find one with 2 HDMI inputs ![]() Thanks again !! |

Yes it is an awesome BD player. I highly recommend getting it even if you never play games.
BTW, love this thread! This forum sure has changed alot in just a few months.

While I don't condone the purchase of a BDP at this time, i'll congradulate you on your entry into the sweet ass world of HD movies. Just don't forget to pick up an HD-A2 HD-DVD player in the future so that you can get the entire HD experience, especially since HD-DVD offers so much for so little. If you don't want to spend much money, Chinese players should hit the market sometime later this year that will make this interesting.
Your reasoning is exactly why I prefer LCD TV's over Plasma. Not only are they lighter and more portable, but I like how they are virtually immune to screen burn in as we know it. There are many gamers that game on plasmas and have managed to find ways to avoid the issue, but personally don't want to take that risk on something that is so expensive anyway

The two problems I have with LCD panels are the motion issues that are getting better, but still have smearing on fast moving action scenes, and the lack of deep blacks. Of and the higher cost currently for comparable screen size, so I guess that makes 3 issues.
![]() I suspect in the next year those 3 issues will no longer be issues judging by how they have been improving on them so far. Congrats to the OP for getting into HD. The PS3 is probably the only smart BD player to buy at this point IMO.

Some analyst released an article last month that predicted that LCD TV prices will drop upto 40% by next Christmas, so that should help to erase some of the price difference. The other thing going on is a competitive battle within LCD manufacturers as the 2nd/3rd tier LCD manufacturers are really stepping up the battle by offering increased levels of performance at a budget price. The deep black issue is one issue that I am not fond of. It's kind of annoying watching movies that have a really dark theme to them, only to see the dark black colors appear more like a dark grey on my LCD. I imagine they'll find ways to resolve this as technology develops. Plasma's used to do horrible with dark blacks, but are doing better than before although they still don't do as great as DLP's. As for the motion blur issue, that appears to be another issue that is getting resolved. The new model year Samsung LCD's are now sporting <5ms response times, as well as the new Sharp's as well. The biggest reason I still prefer an LCD really boils down to space considerations. I don't want to risk ruining an expensive plasma by gaming on it for extended periods of time, and any type of RPTV is really too big for me to fit in the space I have allotted. The fact that LCD's also run nice and cool is a plus since summer time temperatures can get really hot even with the a/c unit on full blast.

You have to watch HOW they measure the response times on LCD panels. There are two different measurements that different mfg use, and sometimes different between models of the same mfg based on prices.
I have no problem telling which screens are LCD vs Plasma even in a very bright showroom as along as there is fairly fast motion, but with many even a slow panning shot can show the motion issues. Don't get me wrong, I own a 32" LCD in my bedroom and I like it ok, but my 50" RP DLP looks better with SD signals also over the 32" LCD I have.

I wasn't even aware of the method of measuring it being different between manufacturers. Either way, I guess you will generally be safe as long as you stick with a good brand model, usually one of the 3 S's. If I didn't like to game so much, plasma would be what I want.................. I do love DLP RPTV's as they seem to be biggest value in terms of screen size and image quality, but I just wish I had the room.

Here's the problem. LCD response time used to be measured by all manufacturers as the time required for a pixel to go from black to white to black. Now some companies are measuring it as time from gray to gray so they can advertise really low numbers.
Gray to gray is actually more important to gamers but which criteria and in what combination companies are advertising can be confusing at best. The answer is to demo the monitors you're interested in with content you'll be primarily viewing and let your orbs be the judge.
