Default Lionsgate CEO: "In terms of High-Def, Blu-ray is the technology of the future"

From an interview with worldscreen.com:

--------------------------------------------
WS: Lionsgate has chosen the Blu-ray DVD format over HD-DVD. Why did you choose that, and are the two competing DVD formats going to hurt the DVD industry?

FELTHEIMER: We need to get resolution on this and, of course, you don’t want to make the consumer sit around and wait, not knowing which format is going to win. I have to be clear; we aren’t formally bound to Blu-ray. We do have the flexibility to go with whichever is the winning format, but we have chosen Blu-ray for a number of reasons, mostly technical. It has very robust copy protection, which is obviously very important for anti-piracy. It’s got great capacity—50 gigs—that is going to be very important not just for the additional features [that can be offered on a DVD] but for enhanced resolution as well. You’ve got seven studios supporting the format. We think that is important. There are lots of hardware manufacturers supporting it as well, and we felt in terms of high-def, this is really the technology of the future.

Im interested in hearing what the hd-dvd cult will have to say about this. Looks like blu-ray is gaining momentum.

CEO's are supposed to deftly guide their companies to success. Let's see how well the LGF Blu-ray titles are selling.

Crash- Amazon rank 28,150

Terminator 2- Amazon rank 4,250

Lord of War- Amazon rank 22,258

The Punisher- Amazon rank 24,950

Need I go on? HD DVD's Top 10 reside in the top 1500 of ALL DVD sales. If Blu-ray is superior the sales of the players and movies don't corroborate this. In order to get to the future you have to execute in the present.

Momentum?

Superman Returns Blu-ray- Amazon rank 1,067

Superman Returns HD DVD- Amazon rank 137

Both titles are #1 in their respective format but as you can see the Blu-ray version is significantly behind in sales.

Thanks, hmurchison. You illustrated the only thing that matters. HD disc sales.

I agree. Taking the best seller currently for both and seeing the difference in sales rankings is very telling about which format is leading right now. Clearly HD-DVD has it all over BD at the present time.

I love how HD DVD zealots are always quick to quote Amazon sales rankings. Do you even know what the rankings mean?

Here's a good explanation from the NY Times: "One sale a day can put a title in the top 10,000 sellers; a sale every few days can land a title in the next tier of 100,000. When the rest of the list is updated each month, rankings are determined by a complex mathematical formula based on the most recent sale and the time between sales."

hmurchison's reply is meaningless.

I'm not oppossed to Blu Ray but the price for a player is too rich for me. When will we see a Blu Ray palyer for the same price as HD-DVD? Until that happens HD-DVD is the way for me.

Friday, baby! Price is no longer an issue and Blu-ray players will be everywhere. By the end of the year we will be swamped with BD players. I won't even get into next year, BD will outnumber HD so much it won't even be funny.

Ahhhh the logical fallacy rebuttal. Yes I think we all know what the rankings mean and because I've chosen to compare Amazon's Blu-ray rankings with HD DVD Amazon rankings on Superman returns I'm assured that the methodology is normalized. Thus we're back to square one. Why are Blu-ray's numbers so low? You haven't answered the question you've simply attacked the system that didn't give you the answer you wanted. Consider it a victory if you must

Why do we need to whip up a thread out of every qoute laid down in print by a partisan suit on one side of this fence or the other?

Is it really newsworthy?

Is there any information here that puts things in a new light?

PS3 launch is going to be a disaster, esp if only 200K is available. The majority of PS3 sales will go to homes without HDTV. Thus that sale means nothing in the format war.
