Default Why does Blu Ray look like crap when I see it?

Everytime I go to the store to see a Blu ray Demo (Samsung player) I see a crappy picture. I mean I could tell any difference in the Blu Ray and standard dvd! Then ehen I look at the Toshiba HD DVD player I can see the difference between HD DVD and standard DVD! I saw a King Kong demo on HD DVD and was blown away, yet house of daggers on Blu Ray looked like nothing special. The only other difference I can see is that the HD DVD was on a plasma and the Blu was on a LCD. However whenever I see I Blu Ray demo of an actual movie I can't see the "High Definition." I do think I see it in the HD DVD format though. Anyone really like the BluRay, perhpas even think it's better?

Two things are to blame.

1. A chip error in the Samsung player creating a slightly softer image. This error is set to be corrected in late October. Unfortunitly its nothing major. The improvement the fix will make will be very slight.

2. Most of Sonys early discs were total rush jobs. Underworld Evolution and The Terminator looked good but Fifth Element and House of Flying Daggers are generally considered a mess. Better then even the best DVD but average at best on an HD level. Newer Blu-Ray discs generally are better.

Agreed the King Kong demo looked fantastic I hope the actual HD-DVD looks as good. I want to see the rex fight in high def bad.

I agree that the Samsung player always looks soft and fuzzy, while HD DVD looks sharp and detailed. It's these details that make the HD experience! Can't believe they are charging $500 more for a player that can't even cut it currently!

I heard the KK HD DVD will actually look better than the KK demo. The KK demo used MPEG4 while the movie willl use VC-1.

Garbage in, garbage out. If the demo disc is compromised, then even a stellar player can't help it. Add to that a setup and settings that may be off, and you've got yourself a poor demo. That's also why you can never judge a TV in the store. However one tv looks compared to the other means nothing if they both haven't been calibrated or at least setup and adjusted properly.

On that note, the Samsung BD player can look as good as the best HD DVD on certain material and when setup properly. The major drawback has been the lack of stellar Blu-ray discs compared to the amount of stellar HD DVD's, but that has been changing each week as Blu-ray has been getting out better discs. Its a good time for fans of High Def with all the great HD DVD and Blu-ray Discs coming out. Nice.

Let the good times roll...

By the way, Lionsgate should have some HD DVD titles out for Xmas. They are expected to announce HD DVD support very soon, and at that moment when I set my paws on T2, my last reason for even considering BD in my weakest, most humble moment...will be erased. I can then hold my nose way up high as I walk past the BD movie section and pick out this week's plentiful HD DVD new releases.

HD DVD support = exclusive support

Lionsgate is trying to change it's board of directors, that's there most likely announcement after all the proxies are in.They say the current board is making bad decisions.

They may be making a board change announcement, but they will be also announcing HD DVD support very soon. A few insiders in the AVS forum seem to be pretty sure of that (one is even willing to bet $1000!).

Boy it must be true because 1) A fanboy posted it on the internet and 2)He's gonna bet $1000 of internet money. It was unclear if his dad could beat up anyone elses's dad, but I'm pretty sure he'd say so.

I know how sensitive BD supporters can be when threatened with any mention of exclusive studios going nuetral, but that doesn't mean that whenever some (pro HD/BD) "inside information" (or claims to such) gets shared, that person is automatically a fanboy. Besides, we're talking Lionsgate here, and they've been in the mill for a long time.

The insiders on AVS are right more often than not. The dad comment was awfully douchey of you - I should know, as I often make douchey comments myself.

Little touchy aren't we. And, since were talking about fanboys, what would your last post be considered. Your response is a bit strong for someone who claims nuetral status.

House of Flying Daggers was one of those early ones where they made the (Stupid) decision to use mpeg2 compression.

I'd ask to see Corpse Bride on blu-ray if you're in a store, apparently it's the best one so far.
