Default Lg to make Blu Ray players in Q3

I noticed that these recent articles about LG "considering" making a universal were being read as if it were already in motion.
The fact is that Samsung already tried making a universal and ran into roadblocks from one or both of the camps should tell you this will not be happening anytime soon..if ever..

This article states that LG will continue making Blu Ray players in Q3.
Not that I wouldn't like a universal .....but I would not count on one at all.

I wonder if other BR player mfg will announce delays as the May release date is nearer. Both formats seem to be having issues related to the studios demands about protecting their content.

This whole thing is a mess, and I may just stop reading about it until speculation becomes reality for both formats. I just seems we are all wasting our time discussing this at this point.

To be perfectly honest as appealling as HD movies sound and as an impulsive shopper I will probably wait a while to buy either one. Even if they had a dual format player out this week the support for movies in either format is slim to none. HD was out and somewhat popular for a couple of years until I got a HD TV set. Then it was a couple years later when LCD/Plasma TVs dropped into my price range before I finally got a LCD. I will at least hold off to see how the PS3 comes out and the prices. I will however not purchase any more DVDs. I may even try to sell off what I got while while I can still get a quarter of what I payed for. I got stuck with a bunch of VHS that I still have and I haven't used a VCR in almost 5 years.

Amen, brother. Preach on!

Lately, I feel like I've been fighting in a war I don't even care about.

Neither HD-DVD or Blu-ray is a worthy successor to DVD. The only way I see mainstream consumption, is if the industries force it (i.e. phase out DVD automatically) or sort of naturally push them in the market at low prices (sort of how progressive players replaced standard ones).

Toshiba is fudging up their launch and with Sony's recent "Hey big spender philosophy." neither product is showing much reason to run out and grab one.

Actually the people who I've talked to, people in the industry has said Samsung decided not to release the dual format player because of political reasons not technical. LG will definitely release a dual format player later this year. The recent patent sharing agreement between LG and Toshiba was related to this.

Lets see them get the parts as a universal only benifits one format at this time.
If you want to call this political....I agree, but the same will happen to LG.
Samsung was stopped dead in there tracks, illegal or not from making a universal after saying they would definitly make one.

All a few articles have said was that LG was "considering" a universal, but this one came out a day later stating they will indeed make a Blu Ray player in Q3.

No were did it state that they would definitly make a universal player....only"considering", in any of the articles or press releases.

When LG said they would try to make a universal player they also PULLED their BR player from the spring release, and put it off until the 3Q. To me, that says they do not want to gear up their factory until they know where a universal player will be going.

I personally think the only way EITHER format will get any legs within 2-3 years is through a universal player being available. Time will tell.

"LG is a supporter of Blu-ray and is now considering a dual format player for later this year," said John Taylor, a U.S. spokesman for the Korean company.

Korean LG Electronics last week became the second high-profile Blu-ray supporter after Hewlett-Packard (NYSE:HPQ - news) to announce it would also support HD DVD.

In addition to throwing its support behind HD DVD, the Korean-based electronics maker also notified dealers in a memo that it was developing a dual-format HD DVD/Blu-ray Disc player, Taylor said.
Sounds to me their plans are pretty clear. Of course the spin doctors will grasp onto any remaining straw they can find to make it seem like it won't happen. Same thing with the Disney announcement.

Back in the day there was some guy in Germany sitting in his bunker saying it wasn't going to happen...

Business report articles are not spin doctors , they could care less who makes what, and there purpose is to report only.
The last report said Q3 for the LG Blu Ray player, along with the reason why.

And as you can see the Blu Ray site has also changed it to Q3 in there latest updates..

This is nuts. Without solid facts and real hardware, it's pointless. I should know better, having experience as a product development tengineer. You have to appease your shareholders, and give target dates for when project x will reach a milestone. Much of it's based on lab testing and initial results and the rest is pure speculation. But folks don't want "soon" as the answer, so you set date. The date becomes public knowledge and a furor of gossip erupts as a result.

Along the way, a device, process, or test data reveal new or unforeseen issues, and you have to reset the date based on those findings. Unless your on the engineering team, you really haven't a clue what's going on. So we can only ponder, derive, or fill in the unknowns with more speculation, gossip and FUD. Frankly, these devices have yet to materialize into something meaniful for the end user as they are still in the build stage. Whatever sits in the lab now, may be a very different looking beast when it's all said and done and the patent's have been submitted.

The real crux of the problem involves a mix of politics that are the guiding or resistive forces of progress. Too many fingers of influence in the design pie, so to speak.

I'm reminded of a small plaque that hung on the wall of our engineering vice presidents office:

"In every project there comes a time to shoot the engineers and start production"

Problem is, who has the bullits, the design studios, or the hardware manufactures?

Default I like the qoute (only modified)

"In every project there comes a time to shoot the engineers and start production"

Substitute "Lawyers" and "Hollywood Executives" and the quote is perfect.

This is a very good point I have questioned for a long time. I think they tail is wagging the dog with the studios calling all the major shots on how/what these players will do. THAT is why Sony being both a major studio and a major CE has me spooked.
