Default Buy one player

I will buy one HD player. It will be the "winner's" player or a reasonably priced player that can handle both, but I only will buy one player.

That means that I will be watching from the sidelines (and continuing to buy regular DVDs) for some time to come.

Default HdDVD player

I saw a report that the first Bluray player will be out soon and will cost in the area of $1800 from Pioneer. That is a lot of cheese. On the same report it was mentioned that the HDDVD player would be in the neighborhood of $4-500. Alittle more reasonable. Anyway it shakes out someone is going to get the short end of the stick will competing formats.

Blu-ray camp has more support and better tech. However, HD-DVD will be offered at a significantly lower price point in general. Toshiba will debut their HD-DVD players at $500 and $800; whereas, currently, the lowest Blu-ray player is expected to be around $1,000.

There will be a clear winner eventually and if Sony is able to lower the price points of the BR players, I believe it will be them.

I had no original intention on picking up a HD-DVD player, but for $500, I probably will. And since I still plan on picking up a PS3 (I will buy a BR before PS3, if the price is around $500), I will get both.

I'm going to wait and use the Force...

I'll go with the format that best shows the Star Wars saga....

God I'm sooo shallow.

I would get whichever one is the least expensive MEDIA and RECORDER. Mainly is because I want to record my favorite shows in HD. and If they have the HD-DVR that's reasonable I might even go for that first and let the price of these format to come down dirt cheap then I'll buy one.
I'm pretty sure that they will have a combo out soon. I don't think DVD plus and minus would take off this fast if it wasn't for the combo.
Less confusion to consumer.
I don't think I want to restart my whole movie collection again.
I was watching my DVD on my 32" LCD and the picture was almost like HD. I'm happy with that for now.

What are the chance that there won't be a "winner" and both format will coexist forever(or until something better comes along). If that is the case, I will go with HD-DVD because it's cheaper. Otherwise I'll wait for the winner before buying.

Going the cheaper route may not work out the best either since maybe your favorite movie will belong to a studio that is not in the HD-DVD camp so that's where a combo player no matter the price will be very valuable.

Has anyone seen a nice looking player from either camp? My god everyone I've seen looks like my old dvd player from 10 years ago. Since they have blue ray drives for computers it can't be the drive portion of the play needing all that bulk. For $1800 I want sleek and modern not boxy and square. I'm going to wait until the next gen comes out, by then hopefully they will look nice and play both formats.

I here ya; reminds me of the old brick cel phones back in the late 80's. I think the PS3 will look the best on my TV stand.

Post media: it's the fuel you put in the car.

Look for the price of the media... it will dictate what you have. I suspect that it will be years before it's commonly available at a cheap price. Even then I have my miss-givings with plastic disk and dye storage. Recent reports indicate data loss as early as 5 years and some experts are suggesting re-copying every ten years. I'd be plenty pee-ed if my $50 a uncopyable DRM HD disk movie died in ten years.

In the mean time PC's will be the media source (hard drive) for most of us.
