There would need to be a universal winner. Imagine Jack (yep, he's back) buying his BR copy of Another Crappy Scary Movie With A Creepy Kid Big Surprise III, and takes it to his buddy's place to watch it and, whack...his buddy has a HD-DVD player. Mainstream people love "plug and play." They want things to be as simple as possible. No one wants to have to buy two players and two types of media. Not to mention studios won't want to distribute two copies of the same movie. Retailers also wouldn't want to have buy and stock two versions of the same movie. There probably won't be a clear winner till about mid 2007, maybe a bit later. But at some point, there will just have to be one winner.

I expect to see the HD format war go on for quite sometime. But in the end, mainstream consumers will only adopt one format.

Would never purchase a seperate HD-DVD and Blu-ray player. I might entertain the idea of a dual format player. But at this point in time I have no plans to support Toshiba's HD-DVD format. From what I have heard HD-DVD has a very soft look and that is something I did not like about D-VHS. I also dont like how HD-DVD places actor information over the top of the movie as it playing. The main beef with the HD-DVD format is the lack of 1080i output via component video. At first I was not happy with the inferior storage capacity. But if its true that most blu-ray movies will not surpass the storage limitations of HD-DVD. Then I guess the 30 gig limit of HD-DVD is not going to be an issue after all.
I do have a single HDMI input on my HDTV so its not a big deal. But its really going to suck for all the early adopters that purchased HDTV's. Toshiba's move to restrict 720/1080 to HDMI only is a big mistake IMHO. Sony's blu-ray hd may be the king of hd formats right now. But because Toshiba is willing to sell there HD-DVD players so cheap. And becuase there may be alot of top notch titles in there format. Sony may find themselves in a serious battle for the home hd market! Sony had the advantage coming into 2006 with major studio support. But just like previous formats Sony seems to be poised to make the same stupid mistakes all over again. Blu-ray players seem to be priced between $1,000 - $1800 with a small number of titles to begin with. Toshiba's HD-DVD players will be between $499 - $799 with a better selection of top notch movies. Blu-ray has a better 1080p picture, superior storage and better extras and the support of more movie studios. The problem is that the average joe consumer will not spend $1200 plus for a player, especially during a format war. All Toshiba has to do is price players at the price point where the average joe will buy it. Which is what Toshiba has done. Toshiba will also need to make sure that there are enough block buster titles to get the average consumer interested in buying yet another new format. And getting the average joe willing to spend money on a new HDTV. I work in the retail arena delivering to peoples homes. Many of the homes I deliver to do not have new HDTV's. Heck many of the tv's are 27" - 31" analog tvs that are not able to accept HD signals. Many of those consumers dont even care about HDTV. Thats not to say that there is not a large number of people interested in what HDTV brings to the plate. HDTV's are really starting to sell and I am willing to bet that a large number of HDTV's where under the christmas tree this past year. If HD-DVD was the only format being offered I might be standing in line to buy a player. But since there seems to be a superior product like Sony's Blu-ray why would we want HD-DVD? Toshiba is only interested in royalties and has not backed down because of that. Even though they do not really have the backing of all the major studios. Toshiba has started to advertise HD-DVD on there web site, something that Sony has not done yet. Mmmmm starting to smell like the mess Sony made durning the VHS vs Beta format war years ago. Sony needs to start acting like they want to win this format war and get it done and over with now. This could very well end up like the dvd-a vs sacd format war. Where after awhile the new title releases dry up and both formats stagnate and go nowhere. Its sad that we can not go out and purchase top notch albums in decent numbers on sacd or dvd-a. Will this be hd-dvd and blu-rays fate or will there actually be a winner. Thus making the consumer a winner, giving the consumer a good platform to enjoy our favorite movies in High Definition. My choice is to ether purchase a stand alone blu-ray player for around $1k. Or to purchase a dual format player and reevaluate wether or not to buy HD-DVD software titles? The only benafit is that if blu-ray fails and hd-dvd wins there is the ability to play hd-dvd titles. HD-DVD Blu-ray HD
