The point was always that the market could not sustain two HD media formats and one would go bye bye or both would flounder. The market can sustain dozens of different soft drink flavors and does, therefore no reason to debate soft drink preferences.

i have watched two blu-ray movies on my ps3, they were not impressive, my toshiba hda2 does just as good of a job upscaling a sddvdd for picture quality, both units are connected by hdmi cables.

These are my thoughts. This debate has been answered or is at least academic for now with the demise of HD-DVD. In terms of video quality, there is no difference because both formats use the same codecs. There might be a difference if different transfers are used. But I haven't seen it yet. All of that extra capacity for Blu-ray is just that-capacity-not really been utilized.

well i have watched two bluray movies on my ps3 by way of hdmi cable am im not impressed, i also have a toshiba hda2 connected by hdmi and have a few hd movies, there is a small difference in a sd movie over the hd in the toshiba but not really nothing to get excited about, as for the bluray i se not much difference over the upscaling hda2.

What type of display are you using? I ask this because something doesn't sound right.

And does he have 20/20 vision is another question along with the screen size and how far away he is sitting too. It all matters just like it does with HD channels also. Heck, I have 20/13 vision and from 15 feet away on a 32" display I think SD analog channels look great.

I too think my NTSC SD-TV looks good with over-the-air HD feeding it, but I'm not going to lie and claim that it looks as good as HD, because it doesn't. SD has 1/6th as many pixels. It's like comparing a PS1 versus a PS3 - no contest.

(cough). bullsh.t (ahem). Parodn me I got something caught in my throat. There's no way that an upscaled 704x480 image is going to look as good as a 1920x1080 image. The SD image has 1/6th as many pixels.

Unless you're watching on an old SD-quality screen? In which case you're not seeing the whole image.

Default I need to get this off my chest

I accept that Blu-ray won! But last night I watched Traitor and every time I wanted to go from one function to another the black screen appeared and the little circle with arrows as something reloaded....can't they get this down after 2 plus years? With HD DVD, the menus glided in and out smoothly and functions worked almost as quickly as regular DVD. Yes, it took a while to load, but then it was loaded. That doesn't seem true with Blu-ray. I still think the wrong team won.

With HD DVD demise. You will no longer have problem with playback with new HD DVD releases. Because their are none. With blue ray. Some of the blue ray live and other internet actives do not agree with blue ray players unless you install the most recent firmware updates. I have a Pioneer Elite BD-94HD, I had problem with a James Bond title. After update everything was Kool.

Default Blu-Ray vs HD upconverting DVD Player

I have a SAMSUNG 46" 1080p flat panel (N46A500). I know everyone is a bit bias in this forum, I have read every post. I want to get the maximum picture quality out of my dvd player, which is an older Sony. Would buying an upconverter or a blu-ray player improve the quality of my old dvd's plus my dvd copies? If so, what do you recommend?

Welcome to HDF

The answer is yes

A blu-ray player is a good choice for an upconverting player, which one...well that is a matter of opinion and size of your budget.

However, for just DVD upconversion I believe that most would agree that the Oppo brand players are the best.

Soon Oppo will be coming out with a blu-ray version, the BDP-83, which will be interesting to see how it peforms.

you need to check your settings, and make sure the ps3 is outputting in 1080p. on a real 1080p screen the difference in night and day when you compare bluray and SD.
