Default Blu-ray player that can play MKV files

I am trying to find a way to play MKV and MP4 files on my TV.

Is there a Blu-Ray player that will allow me to connect a pen drive to its USB port and play these files?

Any info or tips appreciated!

Thanks for the reply. Are there any other choices?

I don't play video games and as such do not like the controller (would prefer a remote). Plus I don't like how the unit generates so mucu heat.

They don't generate all the much heat anymore and there is a BluTooth remote available as an purchase option and even a dongle that will allow you to use a regular remote (I believe).

Hmm, so there are no other units that fit the bill? Was hoping to not have to spend that kind of dough. A newer, cooler model with BT remote would be pretty pricey.

There would be some little known brand that would do the trick,(it's like when MP3 was in it's infancy ,only a small number of players played them, until the big boys adopted the feature) ,but no support and that little known brand would be hard to get an RMA from. SO...get a PS3...

Can anyone confirm that I can indeed take a Hi-Def MKV file from my Mac, save to pen drive, insert in PS3 and watch the movie in Hi Def?

If this works without issue then I guess I will get a PS3!

Also, what is the least expensive model of PS3 that will fit the bill and do this?

Thanks for any and all tips!

To be sure,go to the Sony website, and read about the capability of the PS3 to see if it works for you. It's a great machine ,but it hasn't made breakfast for anyone ...yet

There are blu-ray players that have this exact functionality. See the LG BD570's review on CNET. Also, its probably going to be quite a bit cheaper going with a standalone blu-ray player versus the PS3.

It's really easy to get MKV files to play on the PS3. I do this all the time. You just need two free programs.

First, you run mkv2vob, a free file converter. It turns any MKV file into a VOB file that will play on the PS3. It usually takes less than a minute on my processor to convert a high-def movie to VOB.

Then, you run PS3 Media Server. I run this program over my wireless network, and it allows me to easily stream files from my PC to my PS3. It's super reliable, easy to configure and totally free.

Rather than streaming the files, I sometimes use PS3 Media Server to transfer the files from my PC to my PS3 Hard Drive, where I store them for later viewing.

Let me know if you have any questions as to how this works. It's really pretty straightforward.

I just bought a Western Digital media player from Best Buy. Awesome product so far. Hooks to the tv via hdmi. Plays all kinds of formats including mkv. But you have to get the higher end one for mkv i believe. 119 bucks you can hook it to your network and play files right off your cpu or use a pen drive/hard drive. Check it out if you havnt already.

Tried that one,and then got Java PS3 Media Server (maybe we're talking about the same one) and it too is free and is totally great for streaming all your files(High Def,MKV,avi) to your HDTV...

Default PS3 Media Server

Yep. We are talking about the same program. It's terrific. No PS3 is complete without it.
