Default No sound coming some of my speakers ??

Just bought a BD80 player.

Here is my setup first.

Have my player connected directly to my TV via HDMI cable. Then I have an Optical cable running from my BD80 directly into my Onkyo receiver ( No HDMI inputs on receiver).

When I play a movie I seem to only be getting sound from my front Left & Right speakers only ??

When I ran my speaker test via BD80 menu , I didn't get any sound coming out from my Center channel , Subwoofer & L + R rear speakers.

My surround sound is a 7.1 system but only have it hooked up 5 speakers & 1 subwoofer ( 5.1 ).

Any ideas on what's going on or what my audio settings should be ??

Does your Onkyo receiver have anything like Audussey or some other type of audio calibration program?

Did you set the audio out to bitstream in the player's set up menu? Needs to be that for optical out.

Receivers like that normally have DSP that can take your sound to different modes. Try adjusting them, and see what you get. If everything is connected, you should get something when the right soundfield is selected. And it would help if you watch the receiver's indication for the various Dolby/DTS sound status lights. Mine says Dolby 3/2.1 or DTS when ever those soundfields are inputted. Good Luck

It sounds like the Frosty DVD is likely only in stereo and your receiver is matrixing the other speakers on that when it received a stereo signal.

You must have something set up wrong in the receiver or more likely the player for the optical connection. Are you sure you set it to bitstream for the optical connection and not just for the HDMI output?

You should have an audio setting button in your blu ray's set up menu. On the audio line you have to select bitstream, not just turn off HDMI sound, you would need to do both. If the audio is sent to PCM, which is usually the default, you will have the problem you are experiencing.

Also, if your receiver is new, be sure to set it's selection of input mode to auto so it will choose the one it's receiving. If your daughter's dvd played thru the speakers than it was on a Pro logic setting, for surround you need it to switch over to a digital surround setting, auto allows it to do that itself.

Finally watching some BluRay DVD's.

Seem to have the same problem . No sound from my rear speakers ??

I have it set to Bitstream . Receiver set to AUTO . The BD80 menu gives me 2 options for surround setup.......

2CH (DownMix)+5.1

&

7.1 surround.......I have it set to 2CH (DownMix)+5.1

Which should it be ????

Change it to 7.1 channel surround and if you only use a 5.1 speaker configuration just turn off the rear surrounds in the receiver's menus. That will likely solve the issue.

Check which output you have the surround speakers connected to. Chances are you have them connected to the rear surrounds on the receiver when they should be connected to the regular surrounds for a 5.1 hookup.
