Default Oppo BDP-83 vs. PS3 (60 GB)

What are the differences between these blu-ray players?

A few that come to mind:

PS3:

Game Console
Built-in Wi-Fi
Internet interactive and streaming features through Sony in addition to BD-Live

BDP-83:

Plays DVD-A, HDCD
Decodes Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD MA, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-HD HR
Analog 7.1 audio out
Slide out loading tray
Can be made all-region for DVD and Blu-ray and I don't know anyway to do that with the PS3

Both players do a lot for the money in my opinion.

I like the Oppo a bit better...

The PS3 is a great buy if you are serious about gaming. And you will not see much difference in video quality as a BD player, at least for most people.
But they are certainly aimed at different markets.

The Oppo does seem to do a better job at upscaling SD DVD's.

I would say the PS3 would only be an option if you want to have as few components as possible in your rack and be able to play games. At $299 it's an amazing value for everything it can do.

Chris also neglected to mention that the PS3 can decode all the newer HD Audio Codecs, the same as the Oppo can.

But really, I would only go with the PS3 if you think you may want to play games too. If that doesn't interest you, then I'd go with the Oppo.

P.S. I really thought this thread had been started by someone else.

Indeed, except that strictly speaking it's not a difference: both the 60GB PS3 and the Oppo play SACD.

Yes and both do a lot of the same things. He asked for differences and I am sure I forgot quite a few. I have the original 80GB version but I think the features are the same.

Yes, but it's going to be a bit more difficult to get your hands on a Launch 60GB model of the PS3 seeings how it's been discontinued for almost 2 years.

Of course I meant bitstreams these codecs, both decode all Blu-ray audio codecs and only the BDP-83 outputs analog 7.1.

Yes, pretty much over any player we know. Also, the overall audio quality I would suspect is better. Again, many of these kind of differences would be lost on the masses.

I don't own any PS3 games, but if I buy one, I'll rent them. Does anyone here own both players?

I have mentioned in your threads I have the first 80GB PS3 and the Oppo BDP-83. The only difference I am aware of between my 80GB PS3 and the 60GB PS3 as far as features and performance is in how the consoles handle PS2 compatibility.

Oppo is one of the best BD player, it use Anchor Bay upscaling chip which is one of the best, you will enjoy your existing DVD collection a lot, i myself bought bought Pioneer player for its DVD upscaling capability and retired my PS3 for gaming use in game room. Oppo is also a very good CD, SACD and DVD Audio player, HT magzine has rated it as the best new HT product of 2009, PS3 is OK but has no comparison to Oppo BD player.

I own both and would say the PS3 is a lot better than OK. Certainly some users will prefer the Oppo BDP-83 but far from all and I doubt if a majority would. Having both is a requirement for me but if all I wanted was Blu-ray/SACD/DVD-A/DVD-V/CD, I would only own the BDP-83. If there has ever been a $300 media player that does as much as well as the PS3, I have never heard of it.
