My PS3 does not play SACD, nothing except the CD layer. So are you sure of this. The OPPO, of course, does. My PS3 is the new one so maybe the old one did.

I think the newer PS3s stopped being able to play SACD discs, but I am not sure.

The 20GB, 60GB and first 80GB PS3 all played SACD but I don't believe any other models did. The OP asks for a comparison between the 60GB model and the Oppo BDP-83 and both play SACD.

I am the proud owner of a PS3 60 GB. The difference of $200 in price was the main reason for me.. and the fact that it won't go down in value given its ability for backwards compatibility. I hope $280 shipped with 2 controllers, cables (both composite and component), and a bluetooth remote was a good deal.

I would like analog audio outputs though.. and stellar DVD upconversion..

However, from the threads I've read the PS3 isn't too shabby with the new firmware updates at upconverting DVD to 1080p/24.. is the upconverting on par with the Oppo BDP-83?

Does the PS3 even have an internal D/A? It must in order to use the regular RCA outputs right...??? if so, is it worth using the supplied cables to feed my stereo amp, or just run the optical audio to my HK receiver and let it do the D/A converting?

There is nothing comparable to the Oppo in upconversion in it's price range, and even above.
The PS3 should certainly be competitive with other players near it's price. All players have improved in that regard.

If I had both players side by side, would I notice a difference on my TV? see sig.

I would say if you watch a lot of standard DVDs vs. BD, you would notice a difference over time. Nothing that will knock your socks off, but still enough to be noticed. I think this would hold true regardless of display type.

Even upconversion aside, if the combination of DVD-A, SACD playback, and excellent analog audio quality & options did not interest me, I would have no problem with a PS3, etc.

Excellent DVD-upconversion and analog audio does concern me.. We'll see if I am happy with the PS3 and go from there. Knowing me I'll want both.

you cannot compare the two. If sony had given the ps3 at least sacd
capability then maybe a comment. Oppo has them all in a corner

For Blu-ray playback, you most certainly can compare the 2.

Sure, I can't tell any difference as far as Blu-ray video and audio quality. Load times are similar also.

Chris... been searching around... The newest update for the PS3 allows for 1080p/24 upconverting.

Haven't been able to find much about what the PS3 uses for its D/A converting and how much signal loss there is when running analog audio with the factory cables. I can say that when using the factory composite A/V cables that it has some noise issues when connected to my 2-channel analog amp.

Its better when running digital through my H/K and then out to my other amp. (Marantz 2226)

I think the PS3 does a nice job with DVD and if I am not mistaken upconversion to 1080/24p has been possible for some time. I clearly prefer the Oppo player for DVD and I have other players that beat the PS3 for DVD as well but if I had to use the PS3 for DVD, I would happily do so. DVD doesn't look like Blu-ray no matter what you do so all of the fuss about getting the tiny percent better picture out of DVD isn't as important as many seem to make it.

Chris
Unless someone has a large collection of DVD's that they don't intend on replacing with Blu-ray...
