AQ on Blu/Bram Stoker Dracul/BD 1400 player

I thought this is the place for this question so here goes, Halloween is here and scary movies are a must, last night I wanted to watch Bram Stokers Dracula on Blu just won this on the bay 12.00 brand new. I noticed the AQ kinda sucked or I just didnt configure or set up something properly, any thoughts on the AQ from others ? I have just two fronts and two subs right now no surrounds and or no center, a pioneer 1015 avr so the blu player is hooked up via HDMI to the sony lcd and the audio is via toslink to the avr, the receiver picks up the digital in and auto sets the receiver to stereo, I set the audio on the blu/movie menu to 5.1 compressed and let er rip, heres the problem I had to turn uo the master volume much higher than any other movie , ever to about -5 db I can enjoy many movies at -15 db and that seems too loud this movie at -5 still seemed too low, am I missing something so simple somewhere any thoughts please Thanks, sawz..

You really NEED a center channel speaker. Without it you are missing important dialog as well as other crucial audio cues.

That may be the reason for your perceived poor AQ.

I second L2W. The center channel is the most crucial channel in an audio setup.

Thank You for your comment, I hate to buy one as I really want to upgrade the fronts and would prefer to have all three timbre matched so I'll just have to wait it out,

If you have ANY spare speaker you could use while waiting to buy a full front set that might be an option too.

Even if a friend has a used (and unused) one to sell you cheap or free.

It is wise to have all 3 front speakers timbre matched so you are going about it the correct way IMO.

I took some of the thoughts posted here into account and hooked up a cheaper center for now , well it didn't work as I have my Fronts going from the Pio 1015 to my Emo XPA-5 thru the pre outs and the center is not rated for the power of the EMO so I went to hook it up directly to the PIO but then I remembered once you hook up to the pre-outs the internal switching takes place and removes the signal from the speaker terminals on the back of the PIO , I still hooked it up but no sound.
I imagine I need a center that can keep up with the EMO or just wait it out until I get three new Fronts timbre matched.
