Just noticed Samsung finally issued new firmware for the BD-P1400. Reports are it fixes playback issues people have been having with some movies.
![]() http://www.samsung.com/us/support/de..._name=BD-P1400 to download. Click on the "Firmware" title next to the "Manuals" heading. Or just plug an internet connection into the back of the player and follow instructions on P.45 of the owner's manual. Last edited by clearday; 09-24-2009 at 09:30 AM. |

This FW update is certainly long overdue for one of those worst BD players out there.

As usual, I was dubious about how effective this update would be. Turns out it did nothing to help the issues I've been having lately. I'm not knocking the Sam-techs, just disappointed... again.
Current over-riding issue: 3-disc BD set WALL-E, "This disc cannot be played". First time I've run into that issue. Upgraded firmware to v2.1 (the one that started this thread.) no change. reset the player. no change. un-plug the player. no change. Sammy's latest tech reply seems to suggest upgrading the firmware to 91015_BDP3600_XAA_ISO.zip Notice that it is tagged for BD-P3600, not a 1400 series player. I await confirmation from the Sam-techs before I try this. If I am going to ruin the player I would rather do it with a hammer... know what I mean? I'll update this thread as I learn more. Update -1 Holy Crap! Called support and a Tech picked up on the first ring! OK, after explaining the above to Sam-tech, his reply was something like: "Oh God, don't do that!" Yes, installing 3600 Firmware in a 1400 will likely result in unpleasantry. Sam-tech's suggestion? Try resetting to factory (menu/ settings/factory settings, or something similar) then update the firmware again. Sure, why not? I'll let you know.

WALL-E played fine on my P1400 long before 2.1 was released, you may have others problems unrelated to firmware.

I know I am not the only one with a particularly dysfunctional p1400. I have also not heard of a single bullet-proof player on the market, so I'm reluctant to take the dive for another one. THX for the reply, BTW. Suggestions are always welcome. ![]() On to the update: The short story is... no change. First there is no menu option to reset the player, so Sam-tech was mistaken there. The official method to reset is to hold the FF button on the player while the system is on but with no disc. I had already done that, but I did it again. Sam-tech had also lead me to believe that this would also set the firmware back to the version it was shipped with. First time I had heard that, but hey, he's the Tech. I checked the FW version in the menu... uh, no... it's still v2.1. Checked my custom settings... still the same. Resetting the player apparently means "allow you to change the language."![]() Sam-tech had further mentioned that there was a note stating that it might be necessary to install the FW upgrade twice in order to get it to take properly. Sure, why not? An hour later when I again try both WALL-E BD discs... (ptooii) yea, I get them spit back at me. ![]() Perhaps it isn't getting enough power! Perhaps if I were to reset the system, change the language to Lithuanian and place it on my roof during a storm with a copper rod driven through it... I'll let you know how it goes.

Sorry to hear about all your problems with this player. It is stories like this as the reason I will only buy Panasonic or Sony BD players currently. My BD35 is rock solid and I hear the same with Sony BD players also. Both of these mfg are the biggest "players" (patent rights, etc) for BD so they are always getting firmware out proactively and the same cannot be said for the other mfg of BD players from what I have heard. I expect Oppo will also end up being like this also, but they are more expensive than the mainstream brands.

THX for the moral support, PFC5.
No further response from Samsung. It seems that BD players are a hit-and-miss proposition at this stage. The BD35 gets great reviews from some owners while others note a variety of different issues; only plays xx movie with SD card installed, only when networked, only after FW upgrade, still can't play it,etc. I can't help but feel that the big issue is a mixture of marginal component/build quality combined with the studios constantly pushing through new "features" that the manufacturers have to keep up with. This kind of vicious cycle would tend to keep everything right on the edge of functionality, or, as in my case, often on the wrong side of it. It's sad that I get much better service from my little $35.00 Phillips 5140 than from the 1400.

I got my P1400 as a gift back in September 2007 and have had my share of problems, but I usually just wait it out (until the next firmware release). Nearly everyone that posts on HT Boards have had problems with this toy, so we are not alone.I plan to hang on to the P1400 for awhile until I finally get totally fed-up then I would like to move up to a Oppo 83. I am hoping (with nothing to base this on) that Oppo will release a model similar to the 83 without all the analog stuff, then I will jump; may be a long time

good news/bad news for me:
It appears that my wife (sweetheart that she is) decided to spare me the further tribulations. While I was unloading the entertainment center so I could physically disconnect the power to the 1400 and allow it to reboot, she sighed and said, "Stop. you don't need to do that." Fast forward... she bought me a 240GB PS3. ( I Love that woman!) She hid it at her Mother's house so I wouldn't stumble across it. I'll have it tomorrow. ![]() Bad news... I'm writing this on my laptop because the power supply in my desktop just crapped out. ![]() So now I must study up on the ins and outs of the PS3 as part of an AV system. Right after I order that power supply.

I see your marvelous wife got you a PS3 so that has a hard drive (for the required 1GB minimum storage for BD-Live specs) so you will be fine even with those poorly encoded BD discs. If you have (or will get) a Harmony remote they have a PS3 Adapter for $54.00 (only works with Harmony remotes) that will make the PS3 work exactly like any ordinary BD or SD DVD player here: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...X0DER&v=glance I have the $15.00 Nyko bluewave USB > Infrared dongle remote but it is much better with a harmony remote than nothing, but it doesn't turn on/off/eject discs like you could with the Harmony PS3 adapter, but it is cheaper.

Samsung Blu-ray players are just simply not worth the hassle and this is despite my belief that Samsung is the biggest selling stand alone Blu-ray player brand. I don't think hardware is the issue here, I believe the problem is entirely a result of doing a very poor job with firmware development and support. I don't recall whether this player uses Sigma Designs or Broadcom but it doesn't matter, other manufacturers have used these chips and have none of the problems that Samsung has. I own this player, it was my first player capable of bitstreaming the advanced audio codecs, I believe it was one of the first on the market but it isn't connected now since I have better players including an older PS3 and older Sony BDP-S1.

If you think this player is bad, you ought to read about the Samsung BD-P1200. My guess is most everyone has given up on that player, at least the thread on the BD-P1400 at AVSForums indicates there is still a farily large group using the player. It might not be very good but it plays a much higher percentage of titles properly than the BD-P1200. Just pitiful and shame on Samsung.

First, let me apologize to clearday for having inadvertently hi-jacked his thread.
2nd, great info PFC5. Thank you very much! I've looked at the harmony in passing before but the ability to bring the PS3 into the mix might sway me to pick one up, along with the adapter. Chris Gerhard, I guess the biggest reason I might not entirely blame firmware for the 1400's woes is that there are a number of posts from people that have had little or no trouble with their box outside of slow firmware releases, while lots of folks continue to have issues even after upgrading. For my part, until now I have been able to solve the big issues within a week leaving only the constant annoyance issues. . That said, you're right about the 1200. it doesn't even make a very good doorstop! ![]() Cheers!
