Studio Name: Lionsgate (Gold Circle Films/Integrated Films) MPAA Rating: Unrated/PG-13 (UNRATED Version Reviewed) Disc/Transfer Information: 1080p High Definition; 2.35:1 Widescreen Video Codec: MPEG-4 AVC Tested Audio Track: English DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 (Tested in DTS Core in 5.1) Director: Peter Cornwell Starring Cast: Virginia Madsen, Kyle Gallner, Martin Donovan BASED ON TRUE EVENTS. MARLOWE'S PLOT ANALYSIS: Before I get into the formalities regarding Haunting in Connecticut, let me first say that I had an unsettling experience with the Blu-ray Disc after trying to shut it off...ghosts in my player, perhaps? ![]() ![]() I turned on the special features section of the disc after watching the film, to get a better understanding on the background of the "true" case, and when attempting to stop the playback of the disc during "The Anatomy of a Haunting" feature, my player would not let me enable any functions -- the disc wouldn't stop, fast forward, pause, nothing. After multiple pressings on my remote, I finally got a message from the Panasonic that "The Disc May Be Defective...Powering Off..." and it automatically shut the power of the player down. This is the FIRST Blu-ray to do this since I owning the 'BD10A, and I am curious if it happens to others playing this disc -- please report back if it does. What I also couldn't figure out is why Lionsgate included Blu-ray and DVD trailers for The Eye and Cabin Fever when these are ancient compared to the feature presentation. But that's something I don't even think the evil spirits can explain to me. I wanted to really like this film. I missed it in theaters, and I was on a release day schedule for the BD viewing -- I'm a fan of this genre. Thinking this was going to be along the lines of Lionsgate's other little shocker with similar subject matter, An American Haunting, I went into this with high expectations. Whenever a studio splashes the moniker of "Based on the True Story" across a marketing campaign, it can often be taken with a grain of salt -- my fiancé is reading The Devil Wears Prada right now, and she can't figure out if it's based on real people, where the "real" people fit into the screenplay that was adapted for the film version, if these things actually happened to someone working under a devilish boss...oh, forget it. This "Based on Actual Events" has been taken liberally by now -- remember The Amityville Horror or perhaps The Exorcism of Emily Rose? So, Lionsgate releases the "true" story of the Bell Witch in their American Haunting a few years ago, and we're here again with the "true" story of The Haunting in Connecticut. To truly take in what I just saw in my viewing room and analyze it coherently, I may need to take a couple more viewings of the film in -- I can't make up my mind if I liked it or not, or if it even lived up to its promise of being one of the scariest films to come out in awhile. Gaining more information about the true incident this is supposedly based on, I watched, as I said, the documentary on the disc about the true case, told by the family members that "lived" it. According to their account, the events pretty much followed the course of the film: A couple is dealing with a teenage son who is slowly succumbing to a deadly cancer. Because the radiation treatments are getting so harrowing and breaking the boy down physically, the couple decide to try and rent, temporarily, a house in Connecticut that's closer to the hospital they need to frequent for the treatments. Of course, there's a sinister past to this farmhouse, and director Peter Cornwell brings on the shocks and mayhem early. Right away, it's clear that the son is the channel for visions, ghostly apparitions and things that go bump in the night. In picking his new room in this house to be in a creepy downstairs area next to which an even creepier locked room exists is even stranger. As visions of demonic forces behind mirrors and in reflections on TV sets get more frequent, the family finally unlocks the door to the sinister looking room and discovers a mortuary-type area, replete with embalming tables and coffin lifts. In taking a page from the remake of House on Haunted Hill with its "haunted asylum" theme, Haunting in Connecticut explores the fact that this house was once a funeral home where diabolical events took place. This is where it got a bit confusing. The boy and his sister find old pictures, leading to an investigation of what may have happened in this farmhouse. It seems the man who owned the place performed séances in which he used a boy as a medium to reach out to the spirits for people -- this is the creepy boy the teenager keeps seeing in his room and around the house. Hasn't this theme been done...dozens of times before? Some kind of twisted ritual was performed in which the people's eyelids were torn off them and carvings were made all over their bodies. Instead of crafting a straight-forward ghost/haunting yarn, Cornwell instead goes with a zig-zagging plot involving skin carvings, psychic little boys that may or may not "possess" the teenage lead character and a backstory involving this funeral director. We get quick flashbacks of the old séances being performed, and visions of the "medium boy" who is channeling the spirits as he gyrates and trembles in the séance circle, but we don't really know exactly what is going on -- and why it's being "channeled" through the teen. That is, until he meets a Catholic entity from his cancer treatment center, also in a final stage of his cancer, who comes to the house for an investigation, and it's explained that because the boy is teetering between life and death due to his cancerous condition, these spirits and entities are making themselves visible to him. As in almost all modern "horror," as I have said, the ending is where logic and coherency come apart; the boy's condition becomes weaker and weaker the more visions he has of these souls trapped in the house. When he's put in a mental observation ward in the hospital after the carved markings appear on his body, he ends up escaping and "finally seeing" what he needs to "do" to the house. This got a bit hokey, and reminded me of the similarly confusing ending to 1408 in which the teen sets fire to the farmhouse after chopping away the walls to discover dead, mummified bodies with the same flesh carvings on them stacked behind the beams. Huh? What? And then his Catholic friend from the treatment center sees the dead boy from the past in the back of his car, because he has scooped up his ashes and taken them out of the house...after awhile, I didn't quite get it, either. But I was also confused to Kingdom Come with the ending and "secret" of An American Haunting, so... There is a reference before the closing credits regarding what became of the boy (who supposedly beat his cancer, yet isn't in any of the family interviews on the disc which leads me to believe he's not alive anymore) and something to the fact that since the family left the house, no other owners have reported anything supernatural in nature. Most are calling Haunting in Connecticut a well-made, excellently documented thrill ride, but I'm not so convinced -- there are moments the film remains creepy enough, with dark figures hiding in the corners, brooding entities standing behind characters...yet at other times, it dips into cliché land, with visions of "things" in mirrors and a bubble gum-like relationship between teenage brother and sister, and in which the film almost creeps into Twilight territory. I have to watch more of the true story documentary on the disc (if I can get it to play without freezing up my player again) as it seems to yield a great deal of information about the real family and what happened to them there, but on the surface, I think I was expecting a bit more out of Haunting in Connecticut. VIDEO QUALITY: How Does the Disc Look? This didn't fare well. Some shots on this 1080p encode look clean and detailed, but for the most part, this was a poor, shoddy job by Lionsgate. There's a dirty, nasty, noisy grain that litters most of the transfer, and it gets so thick at certain points it makes the image collapse into horrid softness. Some problems seem to come and go; for the most part, outdoor, sunlit sequences exhibit a nice high definition look -- you know, bright greens on the leaves, detailed rocks and pebbles on the roads...but as soon as the sequence moves indoors and into the dark shadows, the image collapses into the noisy, static-like grain, and some scenes get really bad. I cannot say anything really positive about the video transfer of this disc. The film just didn't look good. AUDIO QUALITY: How Does the Disc Sound? Here we are presented with a Master Audio 7.1 sound mix -- yes, you read that right -- and we're not even talking about a Tyler Perry film! Interestingly enough, this was the first Blu-ray title I have viewed to include a Master Audio sound clip trailer in the beginning -- much like the "DTS DIGITAL AUDIO" clip before the Superbit DVD features, Haunting in Connecticut featured a Master Audio intro clip. Not very involving or dramatic, but it was there. Now, a few things about the soundtrack. Because of my hardware limitations, I was forced, as usual, to run this at its core DTS mix, and, additionally, it was reduced to a 5.1 array because that's my setup. I don't know if these elements combined to make the experience what it was, but this mix didn't impress me all that much believe it or not. From the get go, dialogue is low in the mix, as if a blanket is over the center channel, and there wasn't that much visceral punch to the track. In fact, Lionsgate's DVD version of An American Haunting includes a Dolby EX mix that's more aggressive, in my opinion. The track isn't "poor" per se, and it's certainly not as bad as the video transfer, but it could have been more involving. Surround cues are used sparingly and there's presence to the LFE track, but not as much as you'd expect. I was a bit disappointed with Haunting in Connecticut's audio mix. But, again, as I said, it may have been the combination of reducing it to a core DTS signal and feeding only 5.1 channels. MY SUMMARY: Hard to call this one; it had all the great makings of one of those "based on a true story" thriller/shockers, but something just gets confusing and campy from the middle on. A must for fans of the genre, for at least a viewing out of curiosity. My belief is that it will unfortunately go forgotten like so many other titles in this genre after some time passes, like Amityville Horror and American Haunting or even Blair Witch. MY RECOMMENDATIONS: Between the poor video transfer and iffy excitement to the plot, I can't recommend this one as a buy on Blu. By all means rent it, but you may want to compare it to the standard DVD before committing to a purchase because I have a feeling the DVD may be cleaner and easier to look at. I didn't have a DVD copy on hand to compare. Well, as always, thanks for reading, folks, and please discuss away! ![]()

Cool. I have this on Blu at home from Netflix. Your review is about what I was expecting of this. I really liked the Discovery Channel telling of this (I believe it is also called A Haunting in Connecticut). Anyway anyone interested, that version was broken into like 10 parts and put on youtube.

The most disappointing aspect of the title, believe it or not, was the horrendous video transfer, and the "locking up" of my player, forced by watching some of the extras. Anyone else experience this yet with their Blu copy?

I just watfched it and thought it had some excellent scary moments that make you jump.
The odd thing is. I could not get this movie to load on my Oppo (BDP-83) no matter what I did. I watched on my PS3 instead. The extras (making of) is pretty good too.

Indeed, the PQ of the Region 1 U.S. release was horrid on my setup -- I am curious if others found this as well, so if you are going to buy it, try the standard DVD...but rent it first and tell us what you think!

It seems this is an issue with Lionsgate and their authoring of the title, but I'm attempting to get confirmation from their press relations people.
