Default My Take: Hellboy: Director's Cut

Title: Hellboy: Director's Cut
BD-50 Dual-Layer Disc/Two Disc Set
Video: 1080p/AVC MPEG-4
Audio: 5.1 Linear PCM
Aspect Ratio: 1:85:1
Subtitles: 14 different languages
Run time: 132 minutes
Studio: Sony Pictures Home Entertainment
Rating: Unrated
Player used for review: LG BH200

My take: (the breakdown)

Hellboy is probably one of the better graphic novel adaptations out there. Of course we know that many superhero movies drafted from comic books or graphic novels just plain stink, i.e. Daredevil, Elektra, and The Phantom. The story focuses on Dr. Bloom (John Hurt) and how he accidentally stumbles upon a creature that resembles a red monkey. Raising the creature as his 'son' Bloom aids in adapting Hellboy's (Ron Pearlman) talents into fighting evil. When a old evil rises anew it's up to Hellboy to stop it before it brings hell to the earth. Give this a rental at least, but it wouldn't hurt as a blind buy.

This Blu-ray title provides an extremely superb picture. Colors are incredibly vibrant, from Hellboy's red color to Abe's hues of blue. Flesh tones are accurate and fine detail is about perfect. There is quite a bit of grain in this movie especially in the darker scenes and that's the only reason I did not give this a perfect score. This is definitely an excellent effort from Sony.

The audio is also impressive. Dialogue is crystal clear even during the action sequences. Your sub will get a lot of use during the run time and the surrounds are filled with all kinds of discrete effects. However, the score does tend to get rather overpowering at times and forced me to fumble with the volume a bit, but this is still a near perfect PCM track.

We get a slightly above average supplemental package for this Blu-ray. The documentary entitled Hellboy: Seeds of Creation is fantastic and if you are a fan then this is for you. There are also a few more features including an exploration of the comic and some deleted scenes. Sadly, all of the supplements are in 480.

Movie: 7.5/10
VQ: 9/10
AQ: 9.5/10
Supplements: 6/10
Final word: Purchase for fans and a rental for everyone else

As always thanks for reading folks.

Thanks for the review. I've been debating with myself whether to buy this one and the second, and you may have made my mind up.

No problem Braves. I have owned this one for well over 6 months, but I just bought the second one on eBay for $14.25 shipped. I've never seen the second one so I'll post a review after I watch it.
