Default Martyrs (2008) - Blu-ray (France/ Region B)

Martyrs - Blu-ray - France - Region B

VIDEO
2/5 (for ‘HD tier’ purposes)
5/5 (in context of the nature of the source material and the artistic intention)

Medium level of details. Very high level of untouched grain. Colors are on the cold/blue side, with reduced saturation. Contrast is rather low, though whites tend to be blown out. Black levels aren’t inky, giving many darker scenes a washed out look. Shadow contrast isn’t impressive. Simply put: this is no eye candy and will fail to give you any HD wow effects and gets a 2/5 in this department.

But Martyrs was never supposed to be eye candy. This is a very gritty film shot in the Super 16 format with a low budget, which explains the level of detail. The BD is probably a very accurate reproduction of what the director had in mind. Click here for a longer explanation, frame grabs, but no plot spoilers
Spoiler:
The transfer looks to be largely untouched from what i can tell. The grain is intact and seems to be the real thing. So it’s not grain added in post production (à la 300) or fake grain after a scrubbing job (à la BFI’s Salò). It’s very similar to the grain e.g. found on the Chuck Blu-ray, which was also shot on Super 16.

To give you a rough idea about how it looks, i’ve included a few screenshots. Please remember, that still frames from a movie with a lot of grain don’t give a correct impression about the pq. Grain is a moving artefact, the grain artefacts are randomly changing their place from frame to frame. In motion this works out like a transparent veil over the picture, your brain even applies some natural “noise reduction filtering”. Still frames can’t show this, so they don’t represent the moving video 100%.

I couldn’t make out any serious artefacts that i could pinpoint to the transfer and preparation process. Though i will admit i am not the nitpicking kind. There is no haloing (EdgeEnhancement). I couldn’t make out compression artefacts, but with all the motion blur in the faster scenes, spotting these artefacts is rather hard.
Imo the transfer is faithful to the original film and the director’s intent. I give it a 5/5 rating in context of the source material and the artistic intention.

AUDIO - 3/5
The only audio option on my disc is french DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1. No subtitles are available. The upcoming UK release should have subtitles.

Dynamics: mediocre
Low frequency extension: hardly any
Surround Sound presentation: Mostly music and ambient noise
Clarity/Detail: good
Dialogue Reproduction: good

FILM – 4/5
Synopsis (from imdb): A young woman's quest for revenge against the people who kidnapped and tormented her as a child leads her and a friend, who is also a victim of child abuse, on a terrifying journey into a living hell of depravity.

Martyrs was directed by French director Pascal Laugier. For budget reasons (estimated 6.5 mil. US$), it was shot in Québec, Canada. The film has graphic gore, torture and shows cold blooded merciless killings. It is unpleasant to watch on many levels, don’t expect silly Eli Roth like “entertainment”.

Wow. I don’t know how to rate Martyrs. It starts rather conventional as a raw, bleak revenge story. Martyrs then takes a first strange, yet still conventional turn. Finally it leaves the beaten paths and turns towards a second half of the movie, that’s hard to stomach. In the end it becomes clear, that these weren’t turns at all. Confusing enough?

What sets this film apart from many other horror genre movies: its main point is about an existential question of the human mind. And how far one might be willing to go in order to get an answer for it. While not giving away details about the plot or the “conclusion”, the following part hidden in the spoiler tags is about the controversial second part of the movie.
Spoiler:
While many genre movies now switch into the clichées of ‘Now it gets really bad’ or ‘now let’s fight back!’, this film gets, erm, hopeless. And it stays there for a long time. Many people are describing this part of Martyrs as hardly bearable or to be an exploitation. Once the motivation is revealed though, it becomes clear what we’ve had to witness/suffer through and why. The difficulty here is, that the reason is not sadism.

Whether you can or cannot accept the reasons and motivation given, will play a major factor if you think this is a great film for the genre, or just a film displaying gratuitous violence for sick minds. I didn’t really “get it” the first time. After watching the extras and reading some discussions about the movie, it turns out it is rather thought provoking. And be warned, (thankfully) it is very ambiguous in both the explanation given and the consequences drawn from it….
This film is recommended for advanced fans of horror films, who are able to look past the obvious, graphic nature of the film. Due to its controversial nature and ambiguity, rent it first. Maybe not really a masterpiece, but above average for the genre
(4/5)

Excellent review. This should be the boilerplate for all the others.

I love the format.

So much good technical information. I'll read every word of every one you write like this. It's the kind of plot review I enjoy, and all the technical aspects I like tinkering in to.

Saves me a bunch of clicking having it all in one concise place.

Literally the best format I've ever read for a BD review.

This movie does take a couple views to get the gist of.

FWIW, my wife made it through Cannibal Holocaust but left midway through this one.

The visual nature might not be as brutal as some of the 'big ones', but the motives behind it make it more powerful.

This is not your average horror flick, so take that in mind before you decide to watch it.

Thanks for the positive feedback, guys. I tried to combine both a lot of information and keep the review readable. Some of the spoiler tags were used to keep the review visually as short as possible, and to avoid a wall of words. Anyone who wants the additional info can open the hidden parts.

Wow Niko, I don't know whether to attempt this or not now I certainly wouldn't consider myself an "advanced" horror fan.

Great review, this is the sort we need, concise yet detailed.

Of course you want to see it, of course. However your missus might not to, as i think she got spooked by the ending of Mist? Martyrs comes to that kind of impact and bleak feeling after about 10 min.

I especially liked the use of spoiler tags. This way we get to read your review without giving away the whole movie. Excellent. Thank you.

Have you seen the movie "Inside"? That was quite gory so I can imagine that I'd have no trouble with this one.. Thanks Niko.

Hi Nik

One another lever with violence? The graphics? The nature of the violence?

Now you have me more than intrigued!

Inside is an entertaining movie with a beautiful Béatrice Dalle and a happy end. (If you've seen the movie, you know i'm kidding about the end, but it doesn't leave the one watching it scarred... ).

Martyrs is a film that can actually haunt a grown man, like e.g. Irreversible does and Funny Games should have done, but failed. (Twice btw + @ Herrn Haneke). Erm, i digress...

It doesn't move the boundries of graphic gore, but it can sort of hurt your soul. (Or, depending on what i've hinted at in the hidden part of the review: it doesn't do anything like that at all, which is entirely up to the viewer).
