DANIEL CRAIG IS BACK AS BOND!
Before this turns into the bash-of-all-bashfests -- which it does in the absolute blink of an eye on this site -- let me begin by saying I understand there is an already started "topic" on this title...however, I am submitting my thoughts as a kind of home-grown review for HDF; one that wasn't pasted and clipped for the members that appreciate and like to discuss the thoughts amongst one another (including Sigill, Soprano, etc.). I've read the criticism and back-and-forth banter in the other "thread" regarding opinions over plot, sound/video, etc. and I'll get to that -- first, let me thank PFC and the other member who assisted me tracking down the issue my Panasonic player had with this title; seems my 'BD10A needed a Version 2.5 firmware kick-in-the-ass, and after downloading it tonight, I was able to watch Quantum. The first thing that struck me was the different "feeling" I got for the film as opposed to seeing it theatrically -- I can recall walking out of the theater and thinking wow...this was definitely not Casino Royale or any excellent continuation story of the type. My first blame ran to MGM not re-signing Martin Campbell to direction duty. But seeing it tonight on the small screen -- that is, 50 inches as opposed to 200 feet in a theater (a bit exaggerated) -- gave me a different appreciation for the film. Sure, it's not as good as Casino Royale but upon repeated watchings, you start to get a better hold on the rather confusing plots and subplots. First, let me deal with my issues regarding the opening credit sequence -- this was nowhere near as dramatic or cool as the "You Know My Name" entrance track from Casino Royale; it was just weak in comparison. Here, we have "Another Way To Die" by mainly Alicia Keys, and it's not as "effective" in opening the film. I also didn't know what to make of the British Intelligence's "Star Trek-like" holographic tracking devices; sometimes they just seemed out of place. Now, you know what the biggest problem with this follow-up to Royale was? It took the 007 franchise on a bright, new direction -- with continuing a story that's driven by Bond's own searing bullet of vengeance for who was responsible for the mess Vesper was in at the end of Royale -- and while it opened in that right direction, it fell into the "Bond trap" that so many previous films in the franchise fell into...that is, the villains, plot, story and point after awhile got so blurred, you didn't know who Bond was chasing or why. That was the biggest issue I had with Quantum. And let's just say this: How cool is Daniel Craig as Bond? That's definitely not a problem with any of the elements. I think I got more of the plot watching the Blu-ray tonight: Director Marc Forster goes for the throat in opening the film with Bond in the midst of a classic, wild car chase on the edges of a ocean-hugging cave in Italy, where his Aston Martin and he are right smack in the middle of a machine gun battle -- it leads to Bond arriving in a desolate building of some sort, where M (Judi Dench) and some British Intelligence agents have "Mr. White" from the end of Casino Royale tied to a chair for "interrogation" purposes. This kept the narrative and connection to the previous film intact, which is the way fans wanted it -- but from there, after White proves he has his own organization working within the midst of M's own office and an attempt is made on her life, Bond takes things even more personally and travels around the world -- literally -- to go after clue after clue; what he is tracking down is not made so clear, but as I said, with repeat watchings, it gets a bit more apparent -- a bit. Bond's travels take him from Italy to Haiti, where the first of two women Bond fucks six ways from Sunday in this film appear; this mysterious, rather sexy redhead with a scar on her back makes contact with him, and the plot begins to take shape in that this woman is working for a madman of an "environmentalist" and a corrupt General. Double O Seven has his license for spy tactics removed because after the second woman he screws ends up dead, M can't seem to control him anymore. Thus, we enter a Bond that goes beyond revenge and vengeance or anything of the sort -- his character is at its physical and emotional limits, and Craig plays it to a tee. He takes matters into his own hands, and follows all ties to this new villain and his "Quantum" consortium. Also back are Jeffrey Wright as CIA man Felix and Giancarlo Gianni as "Matthis;" you'll see -- if you haven't seen the film already -- what roles they play this time around. What's humorous about the screenplay in this followup is that the Matthis character, after being wrongfully accused by Bond and British Intelligence in the previous film as working with LeChiffre, is apologized to by having an oceanfront villa bought for him complete with a suntanning sexpot -- but can Matthis really be trusted? Quantum doubles the stunts and action setpieces we experienced in Royale; the opening car chase, the airplane duel and the closing fight sequence between Bond and Mr. Greene, the villain, amidst an exploding building, are beyond reproach for action films of this past year or so. As I said, I gained a new affinity for this picture, after being sorely disappointed (as most fans were) theatrically; Craig is simply stunning as 007, and the biggest letdown, in the end, was the end, no pun intended. The closing sequence, which was supposed to tie up the whole "Vesper" thing, really didn't in my opinion and made what came before it more confusing -- but that's all I'll say about that. There's definitely a door open for another Craig-helmed 007, as evidenced by Dench's "We need you" line to Bond before credits roll at the end. It will be interesting to see how they top this one in terms of action and stunt work. I'm looking forward to seeing Craig in action again, though. With firmware updates finally in place for my player, the disc loaded rather quickly off the "Now Loading..." notice after the trailers. I expected top-notch acoustics and visual candy; I was rather surprised by what I got. Let's take a look: VIDEO ANALYSIS: WIDESCREEN 2.40:1; AVC@28 MBPS; 50GB DUAL LAYER This 1080p encode opened with a very grainy appearance -- the car chase sequence in the cave was riddled with a texture-lathered grain structure as the camera panned across the water and into Bond's Aston. That fine layer of grain remained throughout the remainder of the film, running ever so gently in the background of most scenes. It wasn't distracting, until the interiors turned dark or the backgrounds turned fuzzy; the dark areas were of concern on this disc. Some blacks were so rich and inky -- not a bad thing, mind you -- that certain night time sequences collapsed into some black crush. The outdoor, brightly-lit sequences were knockouts and showed some great detail on faces, skintones and things like pebbles on roads. The sequences where Bond is taking on boats trying to chase him down exhibited natural, beautiful Haitian ocean colors and clean detail on most everything in a shot. Still, I couldn't help but notice that grainy, "gritty" look to most of the transfer -- and I am sure this was a stylistic choice for effect. AUDIO ANALYSIS: ENGLISH 5.1 DTS-HD MASTER AUDIO; SPANISH 5.1 DOLBY DIGITAL; PORTUGESE 5.1 DOLBY DIGITAL; ENGLISH SDH; SUBTITLED IN SPANISH, CANTONESE, PORTUGESE, KOREAN & MANDARIN While I totally applaud Fox/Columbia for presenting Quantum in Master Audio (the standard DVD was even released with a DTS track!), there was something, to me, not "right" about the audio mix here -- I know this has been discussed to death in the other "thread" and the consensus is that the audio track is superb, but I have to tell you -- I have an ear for this kind of thing, and I found the standard Dolby Digital track on the DVD of Casino Royale to be a bit more immersive and powerful. I know that is going to cause a flame war now to end all flame wars...I need to get my ears checked...I'm out of my mind...my equipment isn't calibrated...on and on. Let me clear a couple of things up first -- I was running this track's DTS CORE mix because my player won't support Master Audio, and while that could have had something to do with it, I don't suspect it did because all other core DTS signals from Master Audio-equipped titles in my collection all sound off the hook. Moving beyond that, I can recall being absolutely floored by the opening car chase sequence in the theater -- of course, the decibel level in that theater was 20 times what it is in my own theater but I'm not talking just about volume here...something was just "missing" from most of the action sequences in terms of audio. For the most part, much of the gunfire and explosion action didn't make it into the surround channels, and I found this puzzling. The subwoofer usage didn't seem all that aggressive, either, during big explosions and the like; the scenes where planes, boats or bullets should have leapt into a surround channel following the onscreen action, it didn't seem as if they did according to my ears and system. Most of the action remained front-focused, and this disappointed me. For the most part, though, I have found a new "liking" -- not love -- for Marc Forster's Quantum Of Solace. I'm sure upon more repeat viewings, I'll get more of the plot...or plots. Thank you for taking the time to read, my friends! Enjoy your copies of Quantum.

You got it, guys; thanks for reading!
Again, I realize there is another review pasted in this section of the forum on Quantum, but I figured we could all share in our personal thoughts about the disc in this thread. Yes, Nik, please report back when you watch the film! Thanks Brave for reading.

Is it normal at this forum to have multiple reviews of the same movie? That is very odd?

Hmm.
Every other reviewer says this has the best audio track on any BD. Ralph Potts at AVS gave it a 98. Kamspy at HDJ gave it 5 starts. Bracke at HDD gave it 5 stars. Any wires crossed Pete?

actually ..... this is a nice way for people with 'problems' to completely avoid reviews they tend to freak out about. No need to read it, no need to open the thread, no need to start chit....

Not saying I disagree with you. I personally think there are times when it's appropriate to post a thread in multiple subsections of HDF. They may be few and far between, but there are instances. I also agree with you that this section would probably be much more hugs and kisses for everyone if multiple threads on the same subject were allowed. But I don't see that happening since, again, it's against the rules. |

Having two different people post separate reviews of the same movie is NOT against the rules. What is against the rules is the same poster posting the same (or essentially the same) post in multiple sections.
![]() Posting an actual review versus posting a summary of another site and link to that review is different as well IMO. We really want members to post their own reviews not cut/paste other pro reviews from other sites. At some point we will likely start having "official reviews" here and this has been in the works for a couple of months, but I have not been able to pursue this during tax season as my work load is so busy. IB-Dick has been working on this in an unseen section were I posted a test review about 3 months ago just before my busy season started. After 4/15/09 I hope to check back with him about moving forward with this. We will likely be looking for reviewers to do this once we get it up and running.

Thanks again PFC. Whenever you get the reviewing section up and running, let's discuss, as we did in private some time back.
