Default Dawn of the Dead - overprocessed :(

Slightly quoted from my own web site:
Quote:
Out of the three titles I got a look at today (Halloween, Dawn of the Dead, and Day of the Dead), "Halloween" is probably the best of the bunch - I don't think there's any rampant problems with this disc. It's not incredibly detailed, but I won't hold that against it because for all I know, that could be down to how it was shot (any "Halloween" experts want to fill me in?). "Dawn of the Dead", though, has been goosed with the Temporal Noise Reduction stick. Also rare for a live action film, I spotted what looks like Dirt and Scratch Removal artefacts (the kind of processing that buggers up cartoons).

In this grab, it looks like Dirt and Scratch Removal has mistaken the shimmering reflections in the water for scratches on the film, and tried to remove them. The result is a strange garbling (time code 00:34:39). I actually thought this was an MPEG decoder error at first, but it's not.

I've only seen that happen once though, so it could be worse. The film grain reduction is much more distracting. The whole film looks plastic and slowed-down, and there's the usual smearing problems associated with this type of NR which gives fine moving textures a sort of "splodgy paint"/"sponge cake" look.

It's good to see that smaller labels are releasing HD movies. But from the quick look I've had at these discs, Starz have a lot to learn about the mythical art known as "knowing when to leave video alone".

This is dissapointing to say the least.

This is one of my all time favorite films and I was literally going to finally go dual format just to get this and Day of in HD. (I've already double dipped on both of them in SD!)

Now, Im beginning to wonder if it's worth it...
You have effectively ruined my weekend.

I'll stick with the Ultimate Edition DVD set, they did a great job on that.

No doubt about that, and the 2 disk set of Day of is very nice too, but since I have Land of, and Dawn of (04)in HD, it is just going to annoy me until I get the whole series sitting next to it...

I'd love to see the 20th anniversary restored Night Of without the added John Russo scenes and music put on HD too, that would be a real treat...

this is rather sad to read. i was hoping HDM would stop most of that filtering BS and focus on giving us a more film/theater like experience.

Yeah, the Argento cut of Dawn of the Dead is my favorite. Unfortuntely, they didn't release the different versions on Blu-ray. I still bought it, though. Just to see it in HD. It looks fine, some people just need to be less picky. Not every Blu-ray is going to look like POTC.

Considering we are paying a premium for this stuff, careful mastering is not exactly what I would call "picky".

If the source material available to the disc authors wasn't great, OK, I understand. It's the fact that they appear to have made it worse by overzealous digital tinkering.
