Thumbs up GLOW's The Devil's Rejects Blu-ray Review

In anticipation of the August 2007 release of Rob Zombie's Halloween, I've decided to review his 2nd directorial effort, The Devil's Rejects.

Content 3.5/5

The Devil's Rejects is the sequel to House of 1,000 Corpses and is the story of a family of serial killers on the run from the law. Extremely violent and sadistic, it is not for all tastes, but if you like horror movies this is a must-see. 'Rejects' is not exactly a typical horror movie, though. There are plenty of genuine emotions and a reminiscent quality that give it more depth than standard horror fare.

The movie is set in the south/southwest in the late 70's and Zombie does a great job at replicating that time and place, for the most part. The sets are dusty and dirty and you can practically feel the heat come off the screen. William Forsythe gives a memorable scenery-chewing performance as the renegade sheriff seeking revenge for his brother's murder. The soundtrack is amazing, loaded with great 70's music from bands such as The Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Three Dog Night.

Video 4/5

Aspect ratio of 1.85:1. Looks great! Zombie went for a grainy 70's grindhouse/exploitation look with 'Rejects' and the transfer does a great job with grain preservation. Detail is outstanding, even through heavy grain. Colors are muted but solid. Contrast is very good, the brightest whites (sun reflections) shine but never bloom. Blacks are deep and solid, important since there are quite a few dark/night scenes. No visible compression artifacts, noise was only present in a newsreel which was intended.

Another solid transfer from Lionsgate and proof that MPEG-2 at a semi-decent bitrate can produce great PQ.

Audio 4.5/5

For this review, I chose the DTS-HD soundtrack. Very powerful and dynamic. Dialogue is clear and natural and stays at a good level in the mix. Surrounds are active and really put you in the middle of the action. Shotgun blasts feel real, very loud but clear. Some of the LFE seem a bit shallow. It's very possible that this was intended, but that's about the only bad thing I can say about this soundtrack. (other than the fact that it's not lossless)

By far, the best part of the soundtrack is the music, the 70's tracks are so dynamic and full it is truly remarkable. Surrounds are used to great effect and the basslines throb solidly yet retain the original analogue warmth. The sparse flute notes in the Terry Dean song that plays over the end credits float off and curl back, a really amazing 3D effect. The music earns a definite A+.

No MPAA Rating.

Family Content Value Rating: The movie is titled The Devil's Rejects and it the sequel to a movie called House of 1,000 Corpses. It is clearly a movie the whole family can enjoy.

That is why it is good to follow the review format outlined in the sticky at the top. It gives the review a structured format to follow and it allows a checklist of all the important elements that should be in a review.

BTW, Because of what you said about Gridiron Gang I will be at least renting this one, so you muct have said SOMETHING right in that thread.

Don't be afraid to review discs without following the review guidelines and make them as short as you want. You should see the reviews over in the HD DVD section- most of them are 3 sentences long. If you watch a BD, write about it here!

So is the OP's post an example of a "glowing review"?

Reviewing it based on the type of movie that it is, it is a GLOWing review.

Obviously, it is not intended for people who don't like extreme violence and depravity in their movies. For everyone else, I highly recommend it.

Thanks for the idea, borromini. I'll use that from now on for all my positive reviews.
