My take: (the breakdown)

I went into this Transformers sequel with very low expectations after it got butchered by the professional reviewers after the theatrical premiere this past Summer and that seemed to help at least a little bit. I would never thought it could have been worse than the first one and boy was I wrong. The story again follows Sam and Mikaela as they uncover a plot by the Decepticons to knock out the sun therefore destroying Earth. So the Autobots led by Optimus Prime have to stop them before they can do this. I would so love to delve more into the plot of this movie, but that's really about all there it is because it really is paper thin. The entire movie is just an excuse for obvious CGI effects to get parents to buy the movie for their 13 year old son. Both Transformers and Revenge of the Fallen have raped the original story of Transformers and Bay should be ashamed, but of course he has more money then he knows what to do with so it doesn't really matter to him. Also, once a 147 minute run time was tacked on I was just worn out by explosions and CGI robots shooting at each other. This movie could have easily been 100 minutes in length. Unless you're a die hard Shia LaBeouf or Megan Fox fan save your money and rent this one.

This movie really is really eye candy in terms of its visual presentation. Colors are vibrant and well saturated creating that three-dimensional immersion that is nice to see. Flesh tones are also accurate although most of the actors are covered in dirt or burned powder most of the movie anyway. As far as I could tell grain is nonexistent in this film and if it was there it was extremely light. Blacks are also perfectly resolved even though most of this movie, like the first installment, occurs outdoors. Finally there's no dirt, edge enhancement, or DNR to speak of. Simply put Revenge of the Fallen is what 1080p was made for.

We are supplied with a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio track that will rumble your house at for the entire run time. Dialogue is still crisp and clear even during the action laden scenes and is never hard to hear. I actually enjoyed some of the vocalizations that made up bits and pieces of the soundtrack as they filled all the channels nicely. This is a constant workout for your sub and you will definitely noticing it working from beginning to end. Again, like the video this is definitely demo material.

I would describe the supplemental package as overkill, but at least everything is in 1080. Like the first installment on both HD DVD and Blu-ray we get a two disc set with supplements on each as follows:

Disc 1
Audio Commentary with Bay and the writers of the film

Disc 2
The Human Factor: Exacting 'Revenge of the Fallen': 2 minutes @ 1080
Seeds of Vengeance: 30 minutes @ 1080
Domestic Destruction 24 minutes @ 1080
Joint Operations: 9 minutes @ 1080
Wonders of the World: 13 minutes @ 1080
Start Making Sense: 9 minutes @ 1080
Under the Gun: 29 minutes @ 1080
Running the Gauntlet: 16 minutes @ 1080
A Day with Bay: Tokyo: 13 minutes @ 1080
25 Years of Transformers: 10 minutes @ 1080
NEST: Transformer Data-Hub @ 1080 (concept art for all of the robots and so forth)
Deconstructing Visual Bayhem: 22 minutes @ 1080
Deleted and Alternate Scenes: 7 minutes @ 1080
Giant Effing Movie: 24 minutes @ 1080
Linkin Park - New Divide: 4 minutes @ 1080
The Matrix of Marketing: Two Revenge of the Fallen theatrical trailers each 2 minutes @ 1080 and six TV spots that total about 3 minutes @ 1080

Movie: 5.5/10
VQ: 10/10
AQ: 10/10
Supplements: 10/10
Final word: Worth A Rental

As always thanks for reading folks.

It may be long, it may be based upon a kids toy,,,but all in all,,,we found it to be a fun movie. We knew the the plot to be thin,,the acting to be,,,well,,new Hollywood,,,but the cgi and effects were immersive. It was fun to watch,,,and for us, one to own. For visual and audio,,probably one of the best BD's on the market.

I grew up on Transformers too but Micheal Bay didn't and it really shows. Micheal Bay didn't even see an episode of Transformers before they offered him the movies, he said so himself.

All the effects are great but the way the human story is mixed in ruined the potential of what it could have been. This was too violent for younger kids and too lame for adults (the adults that actually grew up watching Transformers). So the only appreciative audience that really leaves is teenagers. They never thought it through properly, IMO.

HD_Goof, I could not disagree with you more. Sorry, but I simply don't think you got this one right.

I am to the core a Transformers fan period. I grew up with it. My wife is the same, actually probably worse than me. My son has, and I kid you not, more that 120 transformers (we stopped counting) and he's 6. I have silver Decepticon stickers on the fender wells of my black car, they've been there for over a year.

Here's the thing. I was impressed that the first one followed the formula of G1 much closer than I was expecting. It had all the elements that a classic G1 episode had. The second one was a bit too much for kids, I'll give you that for language and violence. But I found myself liking it as much as the first for fun. Transformers is an action category, not a drama, not a character development treatise. You don't watch the cartoon or the movie to see the struggle of the human condition wanting to free itself from the bonds of whatever idiotic thing the director thinks you should. You watch it to see big alien robots shoot lasers at each other and blow stuff up. The one and only re-occurring theme in the cartoon and in both movies is that sometimes it takes sacrifice of your self to save the ones you love. That's as deep as it gets and that all it should be.

I'm getting tired of people claiming these movies have no plot. Who cares? You want a twisting overly complicated plot that makes you forget what the heck is going on in the movie? Go see 12 monkeys or something like that. That's what those movies are there for. What I love about Transformers is that it doesn't even pretend to try to be more than a bunch of alien robots blowing stuff up. That's exactly what it should be. It should have a little humorous beginning where the characters are bantering a bit. The evil plot should be uncovered. The Autobots should battle to stop it. In the end, they win and the Decepticons sulk away planning their next big plan. That's the way it works and always has since day 1.

Who cares if Bay didn't grow up on the cartoon. He watched every single episode. He fell in love with the idea. And the guys who wrote it did. And I LOVE that he made it more realistic than the cartoon. I love that he chose not to allow matter shifting characters like the original Sound Wave and Megatron. He kept the maniacal crazy attitude of Megatron. He kept the cowardly attitude of starscream. Bumblebee was the bravest. Etc, etc. It all fits the form of G1.

Sorry guys, but I loved this movie. I loved them both and own them both. To me, there are different movies for different occasions. No one would think that The 5th Element the best love story ever made. And no one would think that Howard's End was the most thrilling spy movie made. If you are looking for a psychological thriller that makes you think, don't pick this movie up. If you are looking for a big explosion fest with a lot of yelling and people running around alot with a little humor mixed in, this is an Awesome movie. Clockwork Orange it ain't. But then Clockwork Orange makes a pretty dull action film....

It was decent, not as good as the first. One thing I really didnt like was that the transformers hardly had any lines. There was about 5-6 new decepticons that didnt have a single line, and apart from the twins the rest of the new autobots had maybe 1 or 2 lines.

I really wanted to buy this but unfortunately the imax edition isnt available in canada and Im not gonna freaken pay $50 on ebay for a movie I should be able to buy locally.

Sorry, but I disagree with you mobiushky. I think it's the fact that Bay tried to add a plot with the human characters, which was poorly played or directed, and it took away from what Transformers means to me. For instance, the scene with Megan Fox painting the bike gastank with her ass in the cutoff shorts in the air. Yes, Thank you Micheal Bay for that but I don't understand how that was translated from the original story. I guess as a director you feel it's your responsibility to use the talents you have to work with

If you didn't know much about Transformers before do get a full understanding of why Megatron hates Starscream and what Starscreams hidden agenda is? To me the 2nd movie gives more insight but there could have been a better story developed. I think this is what most are disappointed with.

That said, I think it is great to watch on my home theatre system and I will watch it again only I wish that like the original TV series there were less humans and more Transformers.

To Mo and anyone else who disagrees with my reviews:

These reviews are my opinions of the movie, that's all. If you don't agree with them that's fine because you have the right to disagree with them. I personally thought that both Transformers installments, especially the second one, were geared toward a teenage audience who is focused on a movie that has plenty of action, violence, gunfire, and a very limited plot. These movies had plenty of the above and no plot whatsoever. When I review a movie I expect it to have some semblance of a believable story and I simply felt that Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen did not.

Well, that's all I have to say about that and thanks for reading my reviews everyone.

Hiya Soup, you totally got that right. I saw this at a premium theater, and fell asleep. I loved the first one, because I'm a child of Beast Warz!

I got ABSOLUTELY nothing against Goof. No ill will what so ever and actually enjoy reading his reviews. No one finger solute at all intended. If that came across I apologize. I am a little passionate I think.

As for character development, I'll agree that they could have spent a little more time, but then you face the issue of time crunch. It's a big bang action movie with eye candy and little intellectual food. In my mind (for both) that's exactly what I expected going in, that's what I got.

You could also make the argument that the character development between say Starscream and Megatron is being developed over the course of the movies. There is going to be a 3rd installment, so that might be the intent. Or maybe not. Then again, if the movie is targeted to people who grew up on Transformers, we already knew that.

I guess my point is that these movies aren't literary masterpieces and don't pretend to be. And they don't take themselves seriously either. Have you gone back and watched the original G1 episodes lately? They have no literary value at all. In fact, they're just stupid in a lot of cases. The introduction of the Dinobots is hysterical looking back. Make a new robot. Oops robot is dumb. Turn it off. End of story.

I'm not from the Transformer generation so I'll reserve judgement about how Bay "disrespected" the franchise. All I can say is that the only reason to see this is as demo material. The writing is so god awful that I lost count how many times I rolled my eyes

Damn it's getting heated in here.

Personally I liked the movie, yes some of the story left alot to the imagination. "The fallen" for a character name?

Seeing Megan Fox draped across a motorcycle in the beginning was enough for me and the blonde decepticon that tries to get the best fo Sam, not bad looking either..

Story line, yes prob a 5-6 but special effects, sound etc etc, definitely a 10!

These are movies foks....suspend reality!
