![]() Title: The New World (Extended Cut) BD-50 Dual-Layer Disc Video: 1080p/VC-1 Audio: 5.1 Dolby TrueHD Aspect Ratio: 2:39:1 Subtitles: English Run time: 172 minutes Studio: Warner Home Entertainment Rating: Unrated Region Coding: Region Free Player used for review: LG BH200 Cast/Crew Info: Colin Farrell as Captain Smith Q'orianka Kilcher as Pocahontas Christopher Plummer as Captain Newport Christian Bale as John Rolfe Directed by Terrence Malick My take: (the breakdown) I'll be honest in saying that I have never cared for Colin Farrel as I think his acting ability is mediocre at best. I decided to skip The New World when it was released four years ago after I read such terrible reviews, but I figured I would gauge my own opinion and rent this newly released Blu-ray version of the film myself. The story of the film focuses on Captain John Smith and his relationship with Pocahontas of the Algonquin tribe. When Smith is left in command of Jamestown by Captain Newport with the promise of his return in the spring of the following year Smith must decide what's best for the colony. However, after he is captured by the Algonquin after seeking their king for the ability to trade for food he eventually becomes assimilated into the tribe and falls in love with Pocahontas, the king's daughter. After a few years Smith is called away by the monarch of England and he instructs his men to tell her that he has died on the trip back there. Pocahontas must then decide exactly how to move on with her life at that point. I honestly felt this was a rather boring piece of work and I am glad I didn't buy it. Even my wife kept asking when it was going to be over. I was extremely impressed by the quality of this Blu-ray transfer. Colors are extremely vibrant, which include rich greens, browns, and blues. Flesh tones also seem to be accurately portrayed. Grain is extremely minimal as well. My only complaint was some color banding during the brief underwater scenes at the beginning of the movie. We are supplied with a 5.1 Dolby TrueHD track that more than gets the job done. This movie is mainly dialogue and it is extremely understandable and prioritized. Other than some birds chirping, crickets, and wind there is not much going on in the surrounds. Other than the extremely brief action scene your sub will not get any work at all. This is simply one of those movies where the lossless treatment doesn't really make that large of a difference. We get a decent supplemental package with this Blu-ray release. We get a 82 minute making of feature that is divided into nine sub-sections. We are also given two different trailers for the film. These features are presented in 480. Movie: 6/10 VQ: 9.5/10 AQ: 8/10 Supplements: 4/10 Final word: A Rental at Best As always thanks for reading folks.

I agree with your review. The movie drags, but is not bad. Just not engaging. It deals mostly with nature and natural things vs man and man made things.
The video on this disc is great, but not flawless. Same goes for the audio, but it doesn't have much to test it with. I have it on my shelf. watched it once, don't plan to anytime soon. I still am glad to have it though. |

im not going to disagree with you on this BUT you must see him in "In Bruges" that is the kind of stuff he needs to stick with. He isnt that great of an actor but he can shine given the correct role for him to play. AS for "The New World" im surprised you even gave this movie a 6/10. It was a disaster from start to finish for me and had some of the worse pacing in any more i have ever seen. My buddy actually feel asleep at the movie theater when we saw it and he is a huge Terrance Malice fan.
