This is my first thread/post. I have a 21' x 19' completely open room that I want to make into a home theatre. the first and only guy I've had come out to look at it gave me the following proposal. 19k+ is a bit more than I want to spend...and this doesn't even include lighting. but that aside for now...do these prices look fair/good?

the hand written numbers on the left are the breakdown of the component prices.

Wow, You have a beautifull home. IMO, I would do it all myself and save a ton of money. The prices quoted are typical for installers but they get quite a markup. Good luck and post some pics when it's done.:)

for some reason I can't get the 2nd pic to show up any larger...so if you can't read parts of it let me know and I'll type what's in question.
and what about the components....would I be better of w/ different ones? I can't justify to myself spending 20k on this...and I'm too much of a layman to do any of it myself. the most I can do is hook up my bluray and such to my current DLP. :)

Prices look a bit high especially for some of the equipment . You could replace some of the equip with better brands at lower prices. Have you asked the contractor for a price if you purchased the equipment, of your choosing?
Suggestions, for example - Projector JVC HD350, Speakers, almost any known brand other than Niles, Quality A/V receiver other than Sony (unreliable), and so on.

No Stew you aren't, that contractor is attempting to rape the OP.

I was joking :) I am pretty sure that I could fix the OP up for less than half what the guy quoted him. Niles speakers? Talk about OVERPRICED! He could just about get into a set of Paradigm's for the cost of Niles.
For all In-wall-- Polk Audio LCRs for around $600 (for all 3)
Most any Sub for under $500
A Panny AE3000U for $2500, under $1k for a great Carada or Da-Lite screen, $550 for a Denon AVR-1910. A Panny BD60 for about $300 (or less).
About 300-400$ labor to install...
yep, that contractor is looking to take advantage at $2700 (roughly) for labor.

That price is too high in my opinion as well but that is a good size room and you should be able to make an excellent home theater out of it. You should get a few more bids before making any decision. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Depending on how handy you are.. you can save yourself a whole lot of money by doing it yourself. I would sure be glad to give you advice, if you need it. It really isn't as hard to do as it seems.

I put together a home theater in my girlfriend's house in a 17' x 12' room. I built the 100" screen, painted the walls oil lamp brown, and put room darkening blinds and drapes on the one window. I am not much of a handyman and we think it came out great. She was very unsure of what I was doing to her formal living room while I was doing it but after I got it finished and she sat down and watched a movie, she loved it.
I certainly have nothing against professional installers and believe their work is often excellent. Getting a few bids and looking at some of their previous work may make it clear that you can't do something on a par to what they can offer.
