Hooking up a VCR/DVD to my TV

I currently have the VCR/DVD (Toshiba) hooked up to my TV (Toshiba) using composite cables. (Red/White/Yellow) Both Video 1 and Video 2 work great.

When I've tried upgrading the video connection, using either component (Red/Blue/Green) OR S-Video along with the audio connection, I'm getting sound but no picture with either of these hook-ups. (I've tried every input too)

Is there something else that needs changing? (Menu?) I know its not that complicated but thought I've overlooked something simple.

I'm guessing that this combo unit will output S-video and component on the DVD player side only. If you're checking video with a DVD playing, then it surely must be a menu setup issue.

One thing's for sure: If you're going to play tapes, you'll have to maintain the composite hookup.

Actually, I've been checking video with a tape playing not the DVD.

VHS only comes through the yellow (on most players).

DVD should be OK on red/green/blue plus red and white.

S video needs sound cables also, but I'm not sure that which source (DVD or VHS) plays over it on your machine.

I went though the same thing on my Toshiba VCR/DVD-R, though in my case component worked, but HDMI didn't. Perhaps yours is set to HDMI, or perhaps it's set to progressive scan, or some such. You might not even have HDMI, you didn't say a model number.

On mine, there is a PROG/HDMI button on the top of the remote. This toggles though various options including setting the component outputs to 720p or 1080i/p.
