I just got a free BD-P1600 with the purchase of my tv. Do you think this would be a better Blue Ray player than the PS3, which I have.

PS3 or Samsung BD-P1600johst16 08-11-2009, 07:14 PM I just got a free BD-P1600 with the purchase of my tv. Do you think this would be a better Blue Ray player than the PS3, which I have. Techlord 08-11-2009, 07:31 PM In my world I aways question when something is given to me for free, I have heard many problems with Samsung Blu-Ray players. PFC5 knows a little more about these Samsung BD players than I do, some is bound to answer your question better than I can. :D PFC5 08-12-2009, 12:52 PM Keep the PS3 is my recommendation and either sell the Samsung unopened, or use it in a bedroom so you can still watch BD discs in the bedroom. If you rely on a Samsung BD player history has shown it will not likely play ALL BD movies and you might wait months to get an update to allow playback. I have never owned nor will I own a Samsung BD player because of this history, but Chris Gerhard here does own one or more Samsung BD players and can back this up even more. Chris Gerhard 08-12-2009, 06:16 PM I say the PS3 in a landslide over the Samsung BD-P1600. Two things in favor of the Samsung, bitstreaming of the advanced audio codecs and Netflix streaming. If neither is a deal breaker, then the PS3 does much more and does it all better and also has excellent Sony firmware support, the best there is in my opinion. Chris PFC5 08-12-2009, 07:41 PM I agree Chris. tcarcio 08-12-2009, 07:47 PM You could run both and share the duty so they would last longer, in theory. But the Ps3 is a better machine. Techlord 08-12-2009, 09:34 PM I agree Chris. So do I. HD Goofnut 08-12-2009, 09:43 PM If you had compared the PS3 to a newer model Sony, Panasonic, or LG player I would have said they are similar in quality. However, Samsung has got to be the worst Blu-ray manufacturing company in regards to firmware issues. mytime 08-12-2009, 09:47 PM On the advice of many on this forum I have stayed away from Sammy BD players. Use the PS3. Chris Gerhard 08-13-2009, 04:55 AM On the advice of many on this forum I have stayed away from Sammy BD players. Use the PS3. We really have a lot of clout here. I read that Samsung is number one in stand alone Blu-ray player sales, I believe by a big margin. For Blu-ray's sake, I hope that isn't true. I agree and share that hope too. Sammy did a smart thing by offering "free" players with their displays. I lot of people buy the sammys. I will be doing an install in 2 weeks and the customer already has a Sammy BD1500 and loves it. She asked me to procure her a Sammy 1600 for the living room setup I am about to do.. go figure. I tried to talk her into a PAnny but no dice rubystone1111 08-13-2009, 08:59 AM I had a samung rear projection tv that Iwas never happy with. I finally got another tv back in january.. very happy with it. I will also never buy another samsung tv or even a bluray.. just heard about too many problems. Jacob ckone180 08-13-2009, 09:55 AM I will also never buy another samsung tv or even a bluray.. just heard about too many problems. Jacob I am sorry to hear you have heard of a lot of Sammy problems. I have also heard about issues, but mostly due to lack of firmware support on BD players. I personally have not had any issues(knock on wood) with any of my Sammy products. I hope I never do either. My BD player has been able to play EVERY disc I have put into it. I have issues with my PS3 freezing up on occasion, but probably just the game (BF:BC). They have had multiple issues for this title. I am extremely pleased with my LCD set, as it is the most spectacular image I have ever experienced. I know, plasma, plasma, plasma. I have several friends and family with LCD HDTVs ranging from Polaroid to Sony, and Plasma from Toshiba, Sammy and Panny, and NONE, absolutely NOT ONE comes close to matching my set IMHO. Even they tell me this. My TV is last years model and the family and friends range from three years old to last years as well. I really enjoy the Sammy HTiB, even though it is not a high end unit, it definitely suits my needs. Maybe one day you may give Sammy another shot. And hopefully I will not have any issues!:yippee::hithere: HD Goofnut 08-13-2009, 09:57 AM I had a samung rear projection tv that Iwas never happy with. Jacob Samsung's strongest products have always seem to be LCD monitors for computers. Their TVs and BD players tend to be less reliable, although I know two people with Samsung HDTVs (one 768 plasma and one 1080p LCD) that have had nothing but good things to say about them. Now you know of three people with a Samsung LCD HDTV that simply love it, I love the picture quality and can't wait to see the even better PQ with my Oppo-BDP 83 player next month! :D HD Goofnut 08-14-2009, 01:34 PM Now you know of three people with a Samsung LCD HDTV that simply love it, I love the picture quality and can't wait to see the even better PQ with my Oppo-BDP 83 player next month! :D Right, it seems they have the most trouble with their BD players because there have been many reported FW issues all the way through the Samsung BDP-1500. Techlord 08-14-2009, 09:32 PM Right, it seems they have the most trouble with their BD players because there have been many reported FW issues all the way through the Samsung BDP-1500. Thats the number one reason not to buy a Sammy BD player! What good is it if you can't watch a movie on it, thats its sole purpose. Parasound 08-24-2009, 04:57 PM Wow, maybe I need to go out and sell my Samsung LCD and Blu-ray 1500 player, but both are working quite well and neither has had the kind of problems that are delineated here in this thread. Oh, well time will tell. Maybe I am too technically challenged to know a problem if I saw it or maybe I just plain got lucky. Oh, well time will tell. Maybe I am too technically challenged to know a problem if I saw it or maybe I just plain got lucky. The problems are more with new releases so if you do not watch a lot of new releases right when they come out then you may not have a problem. Or maybe Samsung is finally getting their act together with firmware updates but we will have to wait and see. It took a class action suit to get them to start providing updates for the 1200 after it was only out about 14 months. Samsung said they were discontinuing updates but the suit changed their position. BTW, How do you like your Ohm speakers. I use to have the L series myself. | |
