Hello, I just purchased an old 40gb PS3 off Ebay and the fan seems to come on extremely loudly about five minutes into every movie I watch. Is there a way to turn the fan off or to make it not come on full speed? I have it in an area where the sides are completely open and it has 5-6" on the top and it sitting on top of a device the produces little to no heat.
Thanks for your advice!

You may have a bad unit. I say this because I have a 40 GB model that I bought new in June of 2008 and I rarely ever hear the fan even after watching a 2 hour BD.

I have a 40GB and can't hear the fan despite sitting close to the console, about 3 feet. I can move my ear right next to the PS3 and hear it, but it isn't loud at all. I suspect the cause is a bad fan, some fans are just noisier than others.

is the ps3 getting hot?
That is certainly the key to having the fan run more often but I believe any installation will result in the fan running some of the time. Whether or not it is audible when it does run is the topic discussed here. I have to move my head close to mine to hear the fan. It is in the open and gets good airflow but I don't ever cool any house I live in below 80ºF, the temperature is usually set higher than that so my room has ambient temperature higher than many others requiring my PS3 fan to run more often than it would otherwise.

your probably not getting enough air and it's getting hot. Mine did the same thing when I had in a spacious slot on my media center.
Ended up removing and having it out in the open. Problem solved.
