New Profile 2.0/BDLive Insignia NS-BDLIVE01 model at Best Buy. Previous model for $99 was the NS-2BRDVD.

This appears to be a rebadged Samsung BD-1500. Looks like my 1500, fanless and all - which I have 2 of and have work flawlessly.

I would personally stay away from any Blu-ray player that is made by Samsung, but that's just me.

Then why does it look exactly like the Samsung BDP-1500?

correction, it appears the Insignia may not to be a cloned or rebadged Samsung BD-P1500 per info gleaned from another site:

"Samsung - must use USB flash drive, copy over a .RUF file to the stick and use on player to upgrade. Current firmware is a 40.1 MB ISO containing a single .RUF file.

Insignia - must burn an ISO image to a CD and use CD in player to upgrade. Current firmware is a 33.9 MB ISO containing multiple files and a sub-directory called images with linux based kernel stuff. "

also:

"According to AVS, this is not a rebadged Samsung BD-P1500. It's made by a Chinese manufacturer called Desay."

The original Insignia Blu-ray player was made by Funai but the last Insignia model I saw at Best Buy was a Samsung made player. This player for $100 is a good buy but not without risk, many Samsung players suffer from lack of adequate firmware support and the older the player, the worse the problem. I would say spend more and get a Sony or Panasonic player.

Or the LG BD370 or 390 and the only difference is a wireless internet card.

Well, just watched Taken on it and it played just fine. I figured since it's a fairly new release it might have issues but all was well. Load time was fine as well. TBH, the picture quality was similar to that of an HD movie on DirecTV which means I better upgrade the TV from a 1080i to a 1080p.

What type of 1080i display do you have? I ask because I have a 2004 Toshiba 1080i RP CRT that still blows away all other 1080i displays I have seen.

I do not recall Taken being one of those problem titles where the studio ridiculously used a different method/version of Java, but when you run across one of those titles you WILL likely see what we are talking about. ;)

FYI, Not ALL new releases have issue, but there are the occasional titles that DO have a problem and it is THEN that you will wish you had either a Sony or Panasonic BD player since those two mfg seem to be the only ones proactively providing updates before the problem new BD releases come out. :hithere:

Yes, I believe those players are very good but LG is flailing in the breeze with the BH200 firmware and that is the player I had hope for. LG isn't as inept as Samsung when it comes to needed firmware updates but not in the class of Sony or Panasonic.

So the Best Buy Insignia Blu-ray player history is:

1. NS-BRDVD - Made by Funai.
2. NS-2BRDVD - Made by Samsung.
3. NS-BDBDLIVE01 - Made by Desay.

I haven't owned any of them but the model numbers are poorly thought out and really stupid in my opinion. The first two highlight DVD while the last one highlights a poorly received Blu-ray player profile and at least so far, one that has not been utilized very well. I followed the discussion on the first player which was very well received and appeared to me to reliable and performed well. I haven't paid much attention to the third one yet and haven't seen it but what little I have read sure makes me believe it is a nice deal at $100.

Samsung 50" Plasma. I had a HDDVD player for a week before they lost the battle and the movie '300' looked awesome on it (better than Taken on Blue Ray last night). That being said, I have not fussed with any of the picture settings as we are moving in 5 days and I am waiting till we move to set everything up.

The NS-2BRDVD is now credited to Desay as well despite looking the same as the Samsung BD-P1500. The remote used with the NS-BDLIVE01 is very similar, obviously made with the same form as the Samsung Blu-ray remotes. I just held my Samsung remote up to the picture of the Insignia remote, too similar to be just a coincidence. The Samsung BD-P1500 is too close to this player for that to be a coincidence. There is some relationship between the Desay Insignia player designs and the players are from Samsung designs or Desay makes Samsung players since the players and remotes look the same. My guess is that Best Buy has licensed rights or player and remote designs from Samsung and contracted with Desay to make the players.

Has anyone checked to see if a Samung Blu-ray remote will control the NS-2BRDVD or NS-BDLIVE01? It also appears now that those two Insignia players are basically the same except the later model comes with BD-Live firmware installed.

The one thing I didn't like about the player was the remote. It seemed abnormally large. I could use it to club an intruder over the head if I needed to.

It appears long but not wide, in fact similar in size to the Samsung remotes I own.

Okay, I have watched Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (on my new Sony 1080p LCD) and it looks fantastic. Even my kids standard def dinosaur movie looked great. I have only put 4 different movies in it, but it's played every one just fine.
