Manny Ramirez (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=2974) and David Ortiz (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=3748) were among the 104 major league players listed as having tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs in 2003, lawyers with knowledge of the results told The New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/31/sports/baseball/31doping.html?_r=3&ref=sports).
The two were key members of the Boston Red Sox (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=bos) World Series championship teams in 2004 and 2007.
Ortiz declined comment to The Times.
Ramirez, now with the Los Angeles Dodgers (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=lad), recently came off a 50-game suspension for violating baseball's drug policy by obtaining a prescription for a banned female fertility drug.
In June, The Times reported Sammy Sosa (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=2187) was on the 2003 list, and Alex Rodriguez (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=3115) admitted to have used performance-enhancing drugs after he was linked to the list in February.
Players were tested in 2003 as part of Major League Baseball's survey to determine if it was necessary to impose mandatory random drug testing in 2004. There were no penalties for a positive test in 2003.
As part of the drug agreement between the union and MLB, the results of the testing of 1,198 players also were meant to be anonymous. Penalties began in 2004, and suspensions for a first positive test started in 2005.
Government agents initially obtained search warrants in 2004 for the drug-testing records of 10 players as part of its BALCO investigation that led to Barry Bonds' perjury indictment, but they found the more expansive list on a spreadsheet, obtained additional warrants and seized the larger group of records.
The union went to court, arguing the search was illegal, and three U.S. District judges agreed.
The government appealed, and a panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled for the government, but the entire 9th Circuit threw out the reversal and decided to hear the case itself. The hearing was in December, and the decision is pending. The losing side could then appeal to the Supreme Court.

That's what gets me... 104 PLAYERS?!?!?!?

Really?!?!? If that is a true stat, then it seems to me that the "sucess" rate for taking performance enhancing drugs is not that great. By that I mean that I can't think of 104 players with the impact of Manny or David... or Barry or Alex... For someone to risk their entire career with no guarantee of HIGH LEVEL results is insane IMO!! :2cents

All 104 players names should be released. It won't change anything, but I want to see who cheated.

And I heard that Big Flappy got a standing O his 1st time at the plate yesterday from BoSox fans after the story was released.. What a joke. Boo and point fingers at everyone else but not our beloved Big Flappy. He is a victim here. Matter of fact, all BoSox fans should be compensated for such a malicious and deliberate act of slander against "one of theirs"...

Shut the fuck up. Yankees fans cheered Arod or everyone on that club that was caught juicing. Dodgers fans cheered Manny after his ordeal and thats after the fact they threw a syringe on the field at Bonds for doing the same thing.

Obviously the home team is still going to cheer one of there own. First time watching sports??

I do too, ignore the agreement to keep it confidential. It has been confirmed that Roger Clemens was not on the list for whatever that means. Who knows if he was even tested, I don't think 100% of players were. We now know a lot of the suspects are on the list. I am unimpressed by the whining about names on the list being disclosed although I understand the terms agreed to in the first place, things have changed.

That Ortiz cheated was clear when his numbers skyrocketed, his attitude now that he is an upfront honest guy that addresses issues head on is a bunch of hooey. Same with Manny Ramirez, both are clearly lying cheaters. Bewilderment as to why they tested positive can only be accepted by diehard Red Sox fans, the rest of the world understands that both of them know why they tested positive.

Yep, I watched my 1st sporting event (WNBA) on the TV last night. I am passing myself for my 1st baseball game tonight.

Ahh yeah. I am a White Sox fan but remember the a chunk a Cubs fans booing Sosa after the roids/corked bat thing. I loved that.

The Dodgers fans were a mixed bag. Many cheered, many booed and some just sat there eating their hot dogs and said fuck it.. And this was after he did his time. Not rite after it was announced.

But whatever big man. Just keep giving him his Big Flappy (Head Sox Nation) blow jobs every time he asks.. I am not saying to boo him or throw needles at him (but I would). But to give him A STANDING O is a complete joke. A COMPLETE JOKE...And it's their own

It sucks Ortiz cheated, along with over 100 other players. I'm still going to cheer for him though. He is on the team I route for.

Big man?? Big Flappy?? Blow Jobs?? Huh?? It sucks he cheated but i'm not going to cry all over the place or boo a person on the team I route for. At this point I don't even care. I am obviously not a Yankees fan but could care less about the players that did steroids on there team. There are so many players that juiced that it is hard to get upset anymore.

I can't believe they gave him a standing O, OOOOO MYYYYY GAUDDDD. Its baseball ya fuckin weirdo.

Oh yeah and head sox nation makes sense....

There were no penalties back then so it doesn't matter. How many players did this will never be known and alot of things that give a positive test don't even help performance. Let's dig up Therman Munson and test him and see if he cheated.:eyecrazy It is the tests that they do know that matter and if anyone is doing steroids today and get's caught they should be banned for life. Case closed...

No one was freaking cheating. Some people were/are not playing to their potential. Those are the cheaters; they cheated everyone, their employers, fans and families.
