Screen Format Question

I received a call from my 92 year old father-in-law yesterday who lives hundreds of miles from me with a question I cannot answer (not having Dish myself). He has his TV set for stretch format for SD broadcasts but wants to know how to change it to another format. His newly installed HDTV box is working fine. Is there an easy way I can guide him through changing screen formats?

I believe that you can toggle through the various screen formats using the little asterisk button on the DVR's remote control... The format should display for a second each time the button is depressed.

Personally, I leave mine on "Normal" (I believe that is the term... I am @ work now...)

gwhoughton is correct about the format button.

The modes available are:

Normal (which is the right setting for HD - but for SD it displays black sidebars)

Grey Bar which displays SD the same as normal except the sidebars are grey

Stretch which widens the screen to display SD full screen but distorts the picture - everything is wider

Partial Zoom which keeps the horizontal stretch and slightly stretches the vertical - still not true proportion

ZOOM which enlarges the picture both horizontally and vertically to fill the screen while keeping the proper dimensions, but cuts off some of picture and degrades pq

Each press of the format (*) button changes the format.

It actually is very useful, and depends on how good the SD is. I watch some SD in full zoom and the PQ is still pretty good. Best use is on ESPN to get rid of the obnoxious "bottom line".

Thanks for the responses. The problem is he doesnít have a DVR. Is there another way, either via the remote or from a settings menu on-screen?

I don't know about the STB receivers as I've only had the 722 DVR. The remotes may be the same or similar and have the same format options. I'd find out which receiver he has and go to the Dish website and find the manual for that model. Or, if you post the receiver model here someone should be able to help.

Which receiver?

Which receiver?

You said he doesn't have a DVR, but he has to have a receiver (Set Top Box) for Dish. It should have a model number on the front. Also, he may have other options on his TV, but again you'd have to get the model and then get the manual online.

I understand the problem since my Dad is 92 and probably a lot worse with electronics. If you get the models and post them I'd be glad to try and help figure out a solution.

My wife is going down to visit him this weekend. I’ll see if I can get her to bring back the receiver and remote model information as well as the brand of TV.

As a side note, we had suggested for a three years now that he get HDTV to go along with his two HD sets he bought years ago, but he wasn’t interested (I think he didn’t want to spend the extra monthly fee). He’s a widower who lives in his own house. We finally called Dish ourselves and arranged for the upgrade to a high def receiver that my wife and I paid for as a father's day gift. He seems to love HD now that he has it, but is confused on how to un-stretch SD broadcasts. Unfortunately, I don’t have Dish Network myself so I can’t advise him at this point.

Sounds like he may have a ViP211, if so, use the page up button (near the upper right) to change HD format, and page down to change the SD format.

Well, my wife reported back from visiting her father and reports he has a VIP 722 receiver (she may have gotten it wrong), a model 20.01R remote (from reading that number on the back) and a Emprex HD3701 TV.

I downloaded the userís manual for the TV and it does have a button on the remote to change the picture size that IĎll pass on to the old man. But I donít recognize the Dish remote model number from their web site in case I need information on it. Anybody know which remote that is?

from looking at that DISH remote, I think it IS the asterisk button that will toggle between the various picture modes~ :2cents

Hi
Well your father in law bought the wrong model so before installation check that Set Top Box is the right choice.

MarkThatís a good point but my wife might have gotten the receiver model number wrong (I thought it would be a VIP 222k). As mentioned before we specifically ordered via telephone a standard receiver that had HD for one TV and SD for the other as a fatherís day gift and they were installed last month. I guess Iíll have to go down there myself (heís in San Diego and weíre in LA) to confirm what they installed.

Heís a nice old guy, a WWII veteran widower who still lives by himself and doesnít do much all day but watch television, so we want to make his final years as pleasant as possible.
