Viewing 1080i (16:9) on RCA MM36110 (4:3) HDTV

I recently acquired an RCA MM36110 36" HDTV. The TV will display 480p, 1080i, and 800x600 SVGA input. The TV is also a 4:3 aspect ratio monitor. When I play my Xbox 360 at 1080i, the image is squished from 16:9 to fit the 4:3 screen. I think this looks bad but I cannot set up the monitor to letterbox the image. I also contacted Microsoft about setting up the Xbox 360 to output 4:3 ratio image; however, they stated it was not possible with 720p or 1080i. I was wondering if there was some way of converting the signal to letterboxed 1080i or 1440x1080.

The other option I thought of was to use a scaler to convert the 1080i output or vga output of the Xbox 360 to the 800x600 input. This appears to be one device that may work:

On a similar note, do any blu-ray players output letterboxed 4:3 1080i images. Thanks.

Hi,

I have the same TV. Blu-Ray and HD players both work properly with the component input. You get 1080i with Blu-Ray and HD discs. I have two players and the picture is letterboxed if it comes that way or a few of them are actually full screen. But most are letterboxed and display properly.
If you have any questions, let me know.

Thanks,

Thank you Koritz123 for replying. I was excited when I got this TV to experience HD, and then afraid to purchase a Blu-ray or HD-DVD player when I had problems getting the Xbox to display properly. You said your players will letterbox on the 1080i output. I was curious if you set this up on the players and how this was done. Also, what model players you have. I may use these as a reference point for shopping.

thank you again,

Letterbox has to do with the aspect ratio of the movie, not the player. There are quite a few aspect ratios including but not limited to 1.78:1, 1.85:1 (which will display without letterboxing, that is filling the entire screen) and 2.35:1, 2.40:1 which will be letterboxed.
