Flickering on plasma while watching Blu-ray

Hi, I am new to this forum and I am hoping you all can help with my situation. I have a Samsung PN50a650 50" plasma and a Sony S550Blu-Ray player. I have happy with both but I have noticed that I get some flickering when watching a Blu-Ray disk. The flickering will usually be in the background of a scene, usually on a wall or another solid object on the screen. I don't have my plasma set on "torch settings", the player is set for 1080p output and I am using a HDMI cable. The problem goes away when I activate the DNR settings on the TV but I am told it is better to leave that off in order to get the best picture. The TV is rated at 120hz, I believe. Shouldn't this be enough to display a 1080p disk flawlessly?

Check out the mode called "Cinema Smooth" on the TV. That allows the TV to alter the native 60Hz frame rate from TV and other sources to change to a 96Hz refresh rate when connected to a Blu-ray playing playing a Blu-ray disc. The reason for this change is that the native frame rate of film (i.e. movies) is 24Hz (referred to as 24 frames per second or 24p). Since the TV natively runs at 60Hz, the film frame rate of 24Hz does not go evenly into 60, so the TV has a mode to change that to 96Hz (24x4).

That's my semi-simple explanation as to why you may be seeing some flickering, or "judder" when playing a disc. Play around with the settings and check out the "Cinema Smooth" setting to see what that is set at.

Thanks. I am not sure that my TV has that type of setting but I will check. I know I have the player set to output at 24p even though the TV will change it to 60. Should I shut that off on the player so that it does not have to do the pulldown? And will shutting off the 24p output on my player cause a decrease in picture quality or will the TV still do some upgrading?
